Central to their ideology is the belief that government can never work for the people — and they spend every moment of their time in power to make damn sure that's the case.

New open-access paper: Direct File showed that govt could build its own user-centered platform without relying on contractors. But the product was killed after a DOGE lead spoke with the private tax preparation industry lobbying against a private option.
onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

The ability of governments to build and sustain public interest capacity partly depends upon the position of private interests, and the ability and willingness of a government to resist private interest opposition.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) built a digital tax reporting service, Direct File, that created significant public value for users.
Direct File depended upon the creation of internal capacity: a government digital service team that could build digital platforms, rather than procuring a product from private vendors. Government control of the process allowed agile development and iterative improvement that would have been impossible under a traditional outsourcing model.
Long-standing opposition to Direct File by the private tax preparation industry, combined with Trump-era downsizing by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led to the elimination of the tool.

The right wing crash out over asian students celebrating at a UT football game reveals that all along the true goal of reactionary colorblindness was never “meritocracy” but resegregation. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

Color-blind meritocracy was, for many years, a successful rhetorical strategy for undermining antidiscrimination law and excluding Black people from selective schools and prominent positions. That’s why so many former segregationists seemed to suddenly embrace the concept in the 1970s. For them, resegregation—not color-blindness—was always the goal. As long as the success of some immigrants could be used to paint Black students as undeserving, color-blind meritocracy was good. But now many on the right see a new problem: too many Asian Americans in elite spaces. Their success, therefore, must be portrayed as a sinister theft of real (white) Americans’ birthright.

The declining “social trust” that the administration warned against is, of course, not the fault of these students. The problem is bigots like Bo French who cannot accept into their community people who do not share their race and religion, and those who monetize or otherwise profit from that bigotry by spreading it through social media. Like the proverbial child who kills their parents and asks for mercy as an orphan, they are responsible for the problem they are decrying.

As we were saying ...

Tweet from Robert Jeffress:

I support the Pentagon’s decision to livestream the execution of mass-murderer Nidal Hassan.

Capital punishment is commanded by God in Genesis 9:6 to remind people of the sanctity of human life. The more people that can see that truth illustrated through a public execution, the better.

People like Paxton — and the bulk of Christian Nationalist extremists like him — treat public service as part of the extended grift that makes up the entire Right Wing movement. They believe government can never work and everyone is on the take, and they make damn sure to reinforce that view.

ProPublica and The Texas Tribune reviewed Ken Paxton's travel records dating back to 2015. Paxton has taken nearly 1,000 trips with a state-funded security detail, costing $3.3 million. The outlets could only connect 138 of those trips and $553,000 in security costs to actual state business.

Either this is a delightfully amusing coincidence or the No Such Thing As A Fish team did some incredible research before assigning me a fact for custodianship. Thanks so much, @andrewhunterm.bsky.social, @schreiberland.bsky.social, and crew. Glad to finally legitimize Club Fish with my membership.

Televising the execution of Nidal Hasan is about more than voyeuristic violence

Authoritarianism requires rituals of death that seek to transform secular oppression into religious orthodoxy while communicating the need to murderously purge “the other.”

This is Nazi rhetoric, full stop. It's not only a call to instigate a race war in the United States, but it's reminiscent of historic European justifications used to incite pogroms against Jews. People who say things like this are incredibly dangerous, as there is nothing they won't eventually do.

The once Great State of Minnesota is being taken over by Somali Immigrants. There is Violence, Murder, and Mayhem all over the State. The people of Minnesota must fight back. You have been robbed, and abandoned by your State Government. Your Governor is an incompetent thief who doesn't want to get involved. He just wants to get out of town with as much as he can steal, and then, lead a quiet life. The Somalians should not be allowed to get away with what they are doing. They view you as weak and stupid people. Fight back Minnesota, fight back! If you need, the Federal Government will come to your rescue.
Governor Tim Walz, and Mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, must immediately ask for Federal help - and leave the rest to us!
