I Am the Night: The Ultimate Unauthorized History of Batman: The Animated Series is both the story of the creation of a landmark cartoon (packed with new interviews with the folks who made it happen) and a deep dive into what it meant to both animation and the character of Batman. It drops on 9/1.

With a story originally meant for King Kong, Ebirah, Horror of the Deep takes Godzilla to the South Seas where he fights...a big bird and lobster. However, the characters are a blast to hang out with and there's some fun suspense/spy antics near the end. It's How Godzilla Spent His Summer Vacation.

Mulholland Drive came out, gulp, 25 years ago today. Last year I talked to Naomi Watts about it for a package we did about the best acting performances of the 21st century so far. www.theringer.com/2025/08/25/m...

I am very glad to hear it!

This is top notch Halloween party music, IMO

I don't know who emotionally needs this album of Godzilla music that was remixed by Makoto Inoue so it all kind of sounds like John Carpenter themes, but here you go, my friend www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ2B...

I, personally, would not go on the record with a reporter to announce I’m in favor of destroying the playground my kid is currently loving because I drive to work once a week (and the road still wouldn’t go there anyway), but everyone lives their lives differently I guess

Ryuka, 5, said he’d prefer to keep the park — and the playground — over a road during weekdays.
“Playground,” he said softly, avoiding meeting this reporter’s gaze. “I like the ship.”
Asked what would improve the park, which sits feet from Ocean Beach, he was decisive.
“More sand,” he said, burying his hands in the stuff.
Ads separate from the “no” campaign but featured on its Instagram page (opens in new tab) argue that car crashes in District 4 have declined since the Great Highway closed and that Sunset Dunes is the city’s third-most-popular park.
Ryuka’s mom, Denise Leo, 50, supports Prop. G because it would restore the road for weekend commutes. She drives Friday mornings for work as a library aide in San Mateo and wants the option of taking the Great Highway, rather than 19th Avenue. The pathway above the highway always worked when she wanted to go for a run, anyway. Or, wait, does she oppose G?
Told that a “no” vote keeps the road closed to cars, she paused. In 2024, she pointed out, it was the “no” vote that kept the highway open.
“I’m gonna vote to open it,” she said, looking at her son. “Even though he likes it.”

This collaboration was only for three films, but, with a few exceptions, it would define the Godzilla series as it headed into the late 60s and early 70s.

Even while Fukuda was tasked with gearing his Godzilla films toward children, he clearly loved monster violence, from Ebirah's claws being ripped off, to the many bug monsters he burned, to Godzilla's bleeding skull in Gigan to the bloodbath at the end of the first MechaGodzilla.

@dandock.bsky.socialOct 12, 2026, 1:30 PM

Worthy of note is that this is the first Godzilla collaboration between director Jun Fukuda (who didn't really like his Godzilla films) and composer Masaru Sato (whose tastes leaned a little jazzier than Akira Ifukube's.)

With an engaging human plot, memorable aliens, great set design and one fantastically silly Godzilla dance break, Invasion of Astro Monster is a standout entry in the series' Showa era. Going forward, Godzilla's greatest competition would be the rise of television and its own budget.

I really like it. I think it might've been @jayceb.bsky.social who pointed it out to me, but the alien base designs might be the best overall set work in the series. They're beautiful.

And by "one great thing," I mean "someone please help"

@dandock.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 2:31 PM

One great thing about being obsessed with Godzilla is that you can divide the series into eras (Showa, Heisei, etc.) and then divide those eras into tonal shifts (dark, monster battles, silliness, etc.) and then divide those shifts based on budgets and talent involved.

Godzilla does a face turn AND meets his most famous enemy in Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. The alien-infused plot is all over the place, but the kaiju brawls make up for it. Ghidorah, brought to life through a man-in-suit, careful wire puppeteering, and model work is a tokusatsu masterpiece.
