After years of championing "free speech," Texas lawmakers have enabled a dramatic rise of censorship in Texas universities, banning concepts, canceling courses and closing departments seen as "woke," and even using AI bots as censors. All in the name of freedom. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

In other professors’ syllabi, the bot flagged the Pulitzer Prize–winning play Angels in America by Tony Kushner, essays by the Mexican American MacArthur genius grant recipient Sandra Cisneros, and materials related to a class about the Holocaust (that professor was told to drop material regarding Nazi persecution of LGBTQ people).

Putting aside the ideological slant of the new rules, the bot, like many large language models, seems to “hallucinate,” or make mistakes. The AAUP lawsuit lists texts banned for their “sex-based ecofeminist framework” and “gendered ecofeminist frameworks.” These phrases might sound persuasively like academese, but the academics behind the lawsuit had never heard of them; these concepts “do not exist,” the complaint says. Matthew Pehl, a history professor at Tech, told me that he knew several people who’d received reports from the system that were “plainly written by an AI that had hallucinated content or confused content from one class to another.”

Zelenskyy: "Prices are rising because of the war in the Middle East, the blocking of Hormuz. Everyone understands it. If we want to speak with people fairly, if we want to be clear, if we want to speak with our nations openly, people have to hear reality. Don't play games with people."

Reminds me of some "hamburger" cookies that I made years ago for April Fool's Day with vanilla wafers, Nutella, and shredded coconut that I'd dyed green with food coloring. I'm not a baker like you, but I can assemble stuff!

Six miniature "hamburger" cookies on an egg tray. The "hamburger buns" are actually vanilla wafers that sandwich layers of Nutella for "meat" and green-dyed shredded coconut for "lettuce."

Very dystopian that on the article about a A.I. data center poisoning the air, there's a little rainbow A.I. chatbot button just lurking at the edge, waiting to poison the air some more to answer your banal question

The article below with a rainbow tab on the side which initiates a chat bot

Not to take away from celebrating Carson, but she's a "former professor" here in large part because the university shut down her department and cancelled its classes. What pride does the institution claim now—years later—when austerity is forcing other scholars out? What does that 'pride' do?

So... I get a bunch of publicity emails and a lot of the Harper ones feel like they've been run through the plagiarism machine. It's not lovely. Tor, Orbit, not a whiff so far. The difference is palpable.

They were not acting on their own. They were acting as their human programmers programmed them to act, just as you are acting as these corporate shills want you to act by propagating this fiction that GenAI programs are thinking for themselves.

This LLM nonsense is a black hole of productivity. I got a 12 page document from a client (obviously generated using some LLM tool) explaining what they thought was wrong with our software's physics. We had people wasting time on this but an experienced engineer would have spotted the obvious error

Suella Braverman selling 106 copies of her book after all that publicity is so delicious.

Crack 'em while you can, though, because Suella's star might just be on the skids. Despite plugging her book on Question Time, on Tim Shipman's Spectator podcast, in serialised excerpts in the Daily Mail, and in a fawning interview with Allison Pearson in the Telegraph, in its opening weekend, Patriot sold precisely 106 copies.

Billionaires can clearly afford to pay more taxes if they can spend this much on political influence. Tax the rich! If you're in California, vote for the wealth tax.
