Boo! Behold the whitemargin stargazer. It inhabits parts of the Indo-Pacific. This ambush predator's upturned face allows it to spend much of its time burrowed beneath the sand—waiting patiently for passing prey like fish or crustaceans. Photo: Robin Gwen Agarwal, CC BY-NC 4.0, iNaturalist

A close-up photo of the face of a whitemargin stargazer. It has sunken eyes, a triangular nose, and a mouth full of sharp teeth.

Seven US senators from both parties say Trump broke the law by greenlighting Russian diesel imports, pointing to a 2022 ban meant to stop American money from bankrolling Russia's war, and accusing the administration of skipping Congress entirely.

READ THIS: The man who was the commanding general of Fort Hood when Nidal Hasan went on his shooting rampage, and who signed the actual death warrant authorizing Hasan's execution, is absolutely opposed to televising the firing squad. He speaks eloquently for himself here.

Today I'm posting a new video to my YouTube channel! I am revisiting the story of Sam S. Yoon who was a top cancer surgeon in New York. My investigation led to the retraction of twenty cancer research papers: youtu.be/hWKvLAM7QNI

Lovely sunny weather for Oxford half-marathon today. Supporters out in force, with sweet home-made signs saying stuff like "Go Dad Go!". Crowd very encouraging to those who look like they aren't going to make it to the finish.

One of the great things about the internet is you can always find someone showing you how to fix a domestic problem - thanks to Andy on YouTube, my triumph of the day is unjamming a jammed waste disposal. Feels almost as good as getting a paper accepted.

Only a financial journalist would look at academic publishing and think "what that sector needs is more mergers and private equity" to deal with the mess that financialisation has caused.
giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...

Mergers could help by creating savings that offset the increased costs of quality control. The industry’s biggest four groups account for two-fifths of articles published. That leaves plenty of scope to roll up the unwieldy long tail that includes university publishers and professional organisations such as IEEE. There have been a few smaller transactions so far, such as Wiley’s £337mn acquisition of Emerald Publishing in June. But Informa’s decision earlier this week to separate Taylor & Francis from its live events business may give dealmakers a boost.

Private equity can help, having already dipped a toe into the sector: Springer Nature was previously owned by companies including EQT and BC Partners. And the financials still look attractive.

All Trump’s overseas assets should be frozen. Hotels. Golf courses. Offshore accounts. Should not be permitted to enter the territories of the countries that are parties to ICC.

Well, I'm not allowed to decorate the pumpkin anymore.

Pumpkin painted black with 2 zippers for eyes and a black leather strap with a gold ring around the area where the mouth should be that wasn't painted black.
