Furman v. Georgia, 408 U.S. 238, 297 (1972) (Brennan, J., concurring) “No longer does our society countenance the spectacle of public executions, once thought desirable as a deterrent to criminal behavior by others. Today we reject public executions as debasing and brutalizing to us all.“

For a very brief moment I thought you were referring to Hassan Piker and thought the discourse had gotten *very* intense.

@gw-scp.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 3:48 PM

Lmao of course someone else posted this first.

#1 in Innovation baby.

Like many of the gulf coast states, they overspend on fancy toys (new fighter jets) and underspend on fundamentals (a well-trained officer corps). So they're getting dog-walked by the Houthis, who have spent the better part of the last decade learning strategy and tactics the hard way.

@gw-scp.bsky.socialOct 3, 2026, 5:31 PM

Lmao, fair enough.

Do you have any plans to address other Paradox titles such as -- to pick something not at random -- Stellaris?

@gw-scp.bsky.socialSep 30, 2026, 9:46 PM

Fair point.

It would also be incredibly stupid, since all of our debt is denominated *in our own currency* which *we control the printing of*. You can literally always just print more dollars.

It is unconstitutional for the United States to default on its debts, per the 14th Amendment.

Considering that the US Ambassador to Canada is openly involved, I wouldn't put it past this administration.

It's the primary fuel for large trucks, which are used to deliver... basically everything. It's about supply chains.

@gw-scp.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 5:34 PM

Two of them, actually.

Turns out Orwell was totally correct to be paranoid about a Labour government, he just got the wrong one.

There are definitely right-wing parties in Japan that take that view, but it isn't the mainstream. I'm by no means an expert on modern Japanese domestic politics though.

@gw-scp.bsky.socialSep 22, 2026, 4:38 PM

We also used an exceedingly light touch for the occupation of Japan -- the Tokyo War Crimes Trials were practically a farce, and we left the Emperor in place.

@gw-scp.bsky.socialSep 22, 2026, 4:20 PM

Worth noting though that the initial plans for the invasion also called for the use of atomic bombs as they were available, so it's not really an either/or position.

@gw-scp.bsky.socialSep 22, 2026, 4:19 PM

My grandfather was also in the Marines and was slated to be in the initial landings on X-Day. He was, as you might expect, a big fan of Harry Truman for deciding to drop the bombs.

@gw-scp.bsky.socialSep 22, 2026, 4:17 PM

This is basically what the Allies did after the surrender -- the occupation government was primarily concerned with ensuring that Japan didn't starve to death.
