I'm a mathematician at UNAM in Mexico City. I work in algebraic topology, homotopy theory and higher category theory, but am interested in all sorts of math.

I also […]

A friend just asked me: "You said that in the big slop drop there are finally some results in your field of math, are they close to stuff you work on?". I had to confess that no, they're not close at all because OpenAI only went after problemas that matter. 😅

Does it bother anyone else when people say things like "the price of avocados got cheaper"? That phrase means that the price of the price avocados decreased, which is nonsense because the price of avocados is typically not for sale and thus does not even have a price of its own. What people mean […]

I did not realize until the Hodge retractions that OpenAI only had formalizations for about 42% of the claims they vomitted two nights ago. They don't have mathematicians that are experts on all those topics, do they? For the unformalized 58% they were just praying (to ChatGPT, of course) that […]

Having to retract a major preprint because of a sign error made me feel momentarily sorry for a chatbot. 😅 Humans and their easily triggered empathy, huh?

"I think the true point raised by this post is that it is not possible to claim authorship of any result in a world where AI proves them: it would be impossible to distinguish between a behaviour all of us consider unacceptable (buying a finished paper from an external party, and then maybe […]

It looks like I might have to stop reading r/emacs even before the RSSageddon in November: the Reddit website sometimes shows me a popup blocking my view of a thread, asking me to install the app, which I haven't been able to dismiss. 🤷 (Perhaps I should explain I subscribe to an RSS feed of […]

The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples

The recent Jane Wickline sketch on SNL making fun of Dario Amodei had three jokes with basically the same punchline, but unusually for me, I did not mind the repetition at all! And I cannot decide which version I like best, so maybe leaving them all in was the best plan: 1."I may have been […]

Does anyone have a recommendation for a #Mastodon client for a black and white Android eInk device? I'd prefer an app with with pagination instead of scrolling, but at least reduced animations and simple, mostly.colorless design.

I'm using the Mastodon web app in a paginating browser and that's […]

I forgot my headphones at home and now I have to take a zoom meeting through the computer's speakers, like a caveman!

I want to get back to using albums as the unit of music I listen to. I also worry this desire is a boring-ass version of a midlife crisis.

TIL that there are prestigious awards for birds! While I disagree that birds need awards, prestigious or not, if we have to have them, I agree this little guy should get one of the prestigious ones.

Picture of an extremely cute black robin captioned "Black robin which was once world's rarest bird wins NZ's prestigious Bird of the Year".

26 papers in one month on disparate topics? And the only AI use it for presentation, not for mathematical content and the ideas!!! Amazing!

@simonzerafa And a modern technique is to upload a preprint to arXiv. We aren't in need of ways to establish priority. What I find worrisome about that tweet is that many people will choose to never talk about work in progress, instead waiting until they have posted a paper publicly before […]
