It’s different in the UK in that it’s a small group of extremely wealthy individuals funding the ‘religious’ element of the hate. Unlike the US, religion is not a significant voter element. These billionaires are using extremists to say the unsayable & then claim it’s religious freedom.
And to indigenous ppl everywhere, it’s a nasty time with the far right on the prowl. The fact they are attacking & oppressing now is because they feel the earth moving under their feet. Hold your ground. Solidarity.
Most Irish are White & were colonised for 800y. Even if you can’t see the world thru Black or Brown eyes - you could try Green ones - after all if you’re White in a colonial nation you probably live beside, are friends with or are related to us. Research, learn, listen.
… experience this sort of ‘exceptionalism’ wouldn’t happen & other people’s culture & nations would carry equal weight with that of the colonial culture [inevitably a White supremacist one]. It shouldn’t be so hard. Irish people are everywhere- there are about 100m of us with about 7.2m in Ireland
It reveals just how colonised these people’s thinking is & how the oppressed are a badge rather than a focus of empathy for them. Imagine ignoring 800y of colonial history in Ireland & the UK to make it all about America. Of course if one were to truly understand First Nations…
… noticeable. When I explain the origin & figures behind transphobia & homophobia in Ireland & the UK I will inevitably get a series of replies from the US from White ‘progressives’ apologising for MAGA or claiming knowledge of the situation based on whatever ‘Resistance’ stuff they ‘read’.
.. colonial culture dominates discourse in colonial ‘mother’ countries. When someone from Ireland, India etc makes a post on here, immediately a person from a colonial nation will interpret it, without cause, to their country! For instance on the subject of LGBTQ ppl it’s particularly …
.. between myth, colonial propaganda [Cesar’s description of the English Celtic-speaking peoples is astonishingly long lasting pro-Roman propaganda] & vocal traditions. It’s a fantastic area to explore, learn & listen to. Never assume your reality today is relevant to ppl from the past. Even …
The Fir Bolg were said to be predecessors to the Irish Celts in colonising Ireland 2,500y ago. The term means ‘the belly people’. Whether this is a reference to their stomachs or something else is unknown, for instance wine was stored in ‘bellies’ made from leather. The distance…
Push for colonial history education in your schools, libraries & universities. There are entire worlds out there that are part of you, your neighbours, your culture & your landscape waiting to be discovered. Learn to live in colour.
So how can YOU make a difference? Learn the indigenous languages of your dwelling place. Be respectful of tradition & heritage. Research - it couldn’t be easier than today! None of us are accountable for our ancestors’ crimes, but we are required to know about them. Education frees people.
Felicitations on Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Especially to my Fir Bolg friends! The idea behind the commemoration is to recognise indigenous people. Colonialism had not only led to horrific genocides, massacres, wars, famines & epidemics it continues to inform how oppression works today. We all lose.
Died (alas!) on this day in 1492, in Sansepolcro, the great Piero della Francesca. I could gaze forever at the fearsome geometry of his Annunciation.
Bit of positive news to start the week: the online voter registration system voter.ie is now live nationwide (having previously worked only for Dubliners) - now anyone in the State can register or update their details on the electoral register in a couple of minutes using only their PPS number.
They’re getting it from Imperial colonialism. That’s why the UK is the most transphobic country in the West. After all it’s a culture that destroyed the body politic of the nations it occupied, just as it’s destroying the autonomy of the individual now. Not everything is about the US.
I should have linked it, anyway. I’m trying to avoid the insanity in the UK & how triggering it is. The hate is incredibly reminiscent of Ireland before 1993, when being gay was a crime, gay ppl were arrested & jailed, & some tortured in experiments. All the same rhetoric & hate again.
I’ve discussed this earlier today
Fun fact: King Charles is head of the Anglican Church, & of State, in the UK. He could call out the homophobia & transphobia in the British media & UK politics… He could point out it isn’t Christian. In theory he’s ’above’ politics - so ideally placed to stand up for all ‘his’ subjects… 👀
A prominent feature in British media is self-described ‘Christians’ committing blasphemy & wrongly promoting hate in Christ’s name. This has long been a feature in Ireland, where ppl now see it for authoritarianism & hate. Theocracy has fallen in Ireland, so it’s depressing to see it rise in the UK.
