Alito’s description of Masterpiece Cakeshop is truly warped by his religious dogmatism. No religious conduct was at issue in that case. Baking a cake is not religious. I think the case raises hard free speech issues but that’s beside the point. No religious conduct was punished in that case.

“There was no reason to think the motel’s stance would deprive a Black family of a place to sleep.” “There was no reason to think the diner’s stance would deprive a Black family of a place to eat.” “There was no reason to think Emory’s stance would deprive Black students of a college education.”

Alito is so off base here it is scary. The issue wasn’t about a “new moral code,” but a duly enacted Colorado law that made no mention of religion and had nothing to do with religion. He’s just voting his religion, nothing more in these cases.
