I often do, but it takes time that I don't always have. I have also posted some images on this thread on Instagram with alt-text.

Despite all the concerning change taking place, this area has some things to offer. 1. Coffee with a view, Gorleston. 2. Dodging sea spray at high tide near Corton. 3. Stunning geological exposures (here, of the Lowestoft till). 4. Selfie at Ness Point, Lowestoft, the UK's easternmost point.

Coastal erosion, exacerbated by rising sea level and increased storminess, is causing problems even along relatively well protected parts of this coast. These two "promenade closed" signs look almost identical but they relate to two separate sections closed recently for safety reasons.

A potentially serious issue resulting from the cliff retreat is that in one area it appears to be cutting through a former landfill deposit, resulting in the exposed trash of unknown composition being released onto the beach.

The vulnerable cliffs are now retreating rapidly. The first photo here shows three generations of cliff top fences. The second shows a collapsed section of fence strewn across the unstable cliffs. The third shows the offset beyond a section of cliffs protected by a more recent rock revetment.

There are also remnants of concrete defences along parts of this coast, torn apart by decades of powerful North Sea storms.

Waves lapping at the tattered remnants of an old wooden coastal defence structure. The structure was designed to slow retreat of the fragile cliffs composed of Quaternary sands and glacial deposits along the coast north of Lowestoft, Suffolk.

Well one of its first challenges will be to find a way of continuing to be super smart without bring connected to data centres the size of a city that require many megawatts of power to function.

Permafrost Detachment Slides.

"Basically, entire frozen hillslides are sliding into valleys.

Alternatively, perhaps AI will hasten the collapse of civilisation and with that bring about its own demise? I think humans have already demonstrated that superior intelligence is no guarantee of making choices that will increase the chances of survival of our own kind. Will AI be any different?

Indeed. This has been looked at before and there is no correlation. Surface waters around Antarctica are isolated from those further north by the powerful Antarctic Circumpolar Current.

#nepal has suffered another significant landslide and flood event, this time on the Budhi Gandaki river at Chumnubri & Dharche in Gorkha. The cause may be a valley blocking landslide near Chumchet. At least 5 people may be missing and bridges & houses have been destroyed.

A large meteorite impact certainly has the potential to end civilisation, but it comes under the heading of possible "low likelihood, high impact" events (no pun intended with "impact"). There are plenty of scenarios we need to be concerned about that are not low likelihood.

This map from the @nsidc.bsky.social website shows how the current deficit of sea ice compared to the 1991-2010 median extent is distributed. It shows that part of the deficit is indeed offshore from West Antarctica, but the Indian Ocean sector is also making a substantial contribution.

At this time of year Antarctic sea-ice extent is declining due to melt, with some smaller fluctuations due to variations in concentration caused by changing wind patterns. However, low maximum extent in September this year was a consequence of much slower than average growth.

@polarrobs.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 6:46 AM

Then on Thursday the sea-ice extent took another sharp downturn and is now setting new records for low extent for the date again.

@polarrobs.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 6:45 AM

According to the @nsidc.bsky.social Sea Ice Index, this year’s decline in extent after the annual sea-ice maximum last month slowed earlier this week so that for 3 days is was very slightly greater than on the same day in 2023.

@polarrobs.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 6:42 AM

🧵🌊❄️ For the past week Antarctic sea-ice extent has closely tracked its decline through the same week in the previous record low year of 2023. The persistent low extent then was so far below anything recorded before that even experts were surprised and struggled to explain the sudden change.

Meanwhile in Cambridge, which somehow has a reputation as a cycling city, this photo sums up the level of importance the local authorities attach to most cycle routes.

If the USGS slip distribution analysis is correct there were two main areas of slip about 50 km apart, so perhaps another possibility for the 6s period could be a sort of crosstalk between them? (6 s being the approximate time for p waves diving through the mantle to traverse the gap)?
