After more than 25 years of proportional representation elections in Britain, it is a timely moment to assess how deeply proportional representation has become embedded in our democratic fabric. buff.ly/KYCoLMa

Any coalition winning more than 42 per cent of the national vote will now be given a 70 seat bonus to ensure they have a majority. Here is some more information: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

A commission typically works separately from government, draws on experts rather than politicians, and bases its recommendations on evidence.

The electoral system is the heart of our democracy. Decisions about it deserve the greatest care.

A national commission built on public involvement, openness and evidence can get this right. Read more from the UCL Constitution Unit:

In September, Labour and the Conservatives together now polled under 47%. For decades, those two parties shared the vast majority of votes. Our voting system was built for that world, not this one.

What should a National Commission on Electoral Reform look like? We think it needs independence, expert evidence, and a real role for voters. What would make you trust its recommendations? Read our view and tell us yours:

The Scottish Government has said that Scotland's councils are “too small to be strategic” while others are “too big to be local” – something we have argued for many years. buff.ly/2UV03XW

A vibrant democracy isn't just about elections; it's about making politics accessible and inviting. Denmark’s Folkemødet shows what’s possible when citizens and public figures share the same space. buff.ly/BWZGsMl

Under First Past the Post, you get one candidate per party. If you don't like them, your only choice is to back a different party. That makes it easy for people with fringe views to slip through.

Defenders of First Past the Post claim it produces stable, single-party government in a two-party system. Kemi Badenoch says we have multi-party politics, political volatility & the prospect of a hung parliament. If FPTP can’t deliver on its own terms, what exactly is the case for keeping it?

A National Commission on Electoral Reform won't be starting from scratch. Proportional voting systems have been used across the UK for more than 25 years. That's a wealth of real-world evidence to draw on.

The National Commission that Andy Burnham has announced must bring experts and the public together to build the consensus needed for truly representative democracy. buff.ly/BlaDSVv

In British Columbia, 160 randomly selected citizens studied voting systems before recommending one. Given the chance, voters weigh the trade-offs carefully. The public must have a real voice in the UK's commission too.

Why does politics feel so divided? Part of the answer is how we vote. First Past the Post rewards parties for firing up their base, not for reaching across the divide.

A historic moment. The Prime Minister has announced a National Commission on Electoral Reform and a manifesto pledge to change our voting system so everyone's vote counts.

Now the work begins. Here's what it needs to succeed:

An independent National Commission, open to all views, could finally deliver a voting system that makes everyone’s vote worth the same. buff.ly/BlaDSVv
