After 40 years, privatisation of our public services has failed. It's time for public ownership. We use it, we pay for it, We Own It.

After being rejected 4 times, Thames Water's creditors are now submitting a 5th proposal to keep the failing utility in private hands. This time, they're promising to increase public control. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻. 1/2

Your regular reminder that public ownership is popular. People want energy bills they can afford, clean water, public transport that’s reliable, an NHS to be proud of, care that families & communities can rely on, a Royal Mail that actually delivers letters. Andy Burnham, are you listening?

A graphic that shows that 82% of the public support public ownership of water; 70% support public ownership of energy; 76% support public ownership of Royal Mail; 86% support full public ownership of the NHS and 76% support public ownership of rail"

Andy Burnham must properly fund our NHS and end NHS privatisation We spend £40 billion LESS on health per capita than comparable European countries like France and Germany After years of underfunding and privatisation, our NHS is on its knees. It's time to get serious about reinstating our NHS

Last week South West Water were fined £8m for >200 sewage discharges in Devon & Cornwall over a 5 year period. Their mantra is “1 pollution is too many”. In the first 11 weeks of 2026, water companies had already dumped over 69,000 hours of sewage into bathing waters. ENOUGH. Public ownership now.

Photo of George Monbiot accompanying a quote from The Guardian, July 2025: "Instead of borrowing to pay for infrastructure improvement, water companies borrowed to pay for dividends. Just as the water companies dump their sewage in the rivers, they have also dumped their liabilities on the public. The country becomes their dustbin."

It's not just the endless bill increases. It's not just that 1/3 of your bill goes to paying shareholder dividends and servicing debt. It's not just the 1/2 million sewage discharges in one year. It's the corrupt system, which rewards water bosses for failure, that people can't stand.

Wales is showing that ending profit-making in children’s social care can be done. The first phase of the Welsh Government’s reforms is now underway — with all new children’s homes and fostering providers required to operate on a not-for-profit basis. Why aren't we doing this in England?

@weownit.org.ukOct 9, 2026, 3:34 PM

Buses are the most-used form of public transport in England. They were deregulated under Thatcher in 1986, & we've been paying the price ever since., Bus fares have risen over 500% since 1987. Since 2009-10 we've lost 3,300 routes. We need more than public control of buses, we need ownership.

Graphic that highlights four models of bus ownership in the UK from full privatisation to the Manchester model where buses are privately owned but the market is regulated, to the Reading model where the buses are publicly owned but the market is deregulated, and lastly to We Own It's proposed model where the buses are publicly owned and the market is regulated

PRIVATISATION IS TOO EXPENSIVE. Approximately 1/3 of our water bills is spent on expensive debt and shareholder payouts. Under public ownership, that's money we can spend on fixing our broken infrastructure.

@weownit.org.ukOct 8, 2026, 3:28 PM

All the investment in our water system comes from one place: customers' bills. The government needs to bring not just water back into public ownership, but every critical asset that this country has under our control, owned by us.

🔴 Labour: Candidate is calling for public ownership of Thames Water, but this is not official party policy. 🟢 Greens: Thames Water to be brought into public ownership before Christmas. No compensation for shareholders or creditors.

We Own It is independent of any political party. 🌊If you're voting in Holborn and St Pancras based on public ownership, this is what the leading contenders are saying about Thames Water 🌊 👇

It's GOOD The debate about children’s social care is increasingly focusing on private profit. But capping profit IS NOT the same as ending it. The goal must be to make sure that public money is being spent on care - not generating returns for private investors.

TAKE BACK OUR ROYAL MAIL

Andy Burnham make it 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫, let it go bust if it can't, then take over.

OR just buy it back at a discount as a vital 500 year old asset.

Andy Burnham has said he wants to reverse Thatcher’s 40 year legacy of privatisation.

Now is the time for him to seize the moment, anchored by a set of principles that are uncompromising enough to make a difference to people's lives.

Our new report sets out how to do it. vist.ly/5mh3j

"“If water companies cannot invest without raising our bills, they should be allowed to go bust and then taken into public ownership. The public has had enough of the rising bills, service cuts, hosepipe bans and sewage dumping. It is time for water to be taken into public ownership like 90% of the world.”

Royal Mail since privatisation in 2013
- stamp prices up 107% 💰
- failing to deliver letters, missing statutory targets 📮
- now wants to cut 2500 jobs ⁉️

Absolutely disgraceful

Andy Burnham must step in and TAKE BACK OUR ROYAL MAIL

Private water companies were handed a debt-free industry in 1989 under Thatcher. Since 1991 your water bills have gone up by 44% and a third of what you pay goes towards dividends payments and financing debt. They need to go bust and be taken back into public hands. Now. Not in 10 years' time.

@weownit.org.ukOct 7, 2026, 1:21 PM

LET THEM GO BUST ! Last year, Thames Water took out a £3bn loan - at 9.75% interest. And now they want another £2.4bn to keep going?! ENOUGH. If water companies can't survive without rip-off loans, they should be declared insolvent and brought into public hands through special administration.

Screenshot from The Daily Telegraph, 2nd October 2026: "Thames Water seeks £2.4bn lifeline after rescue plan stalls Troubled utility risks more financial turmoil if its army of hedge fund backers do not provide emergency cash", above a graphic of the Thames Water logo swirling down a drain.

Calls to remove profiteering from children’s social care are growing. But if we’re serious about tackling profiteering, we need to ask: when a council pays for a child’s care, where does the money go? Children’s care should be about children, not profit.

@weownit.org.ukOct 7, 2026, 9:37 AM

Privatisation has benefited overseas investors, who have plundered the assets we used to own.

It's way past time to call an end to the failed ideology of the Thatcher era and beyond.

Read our report on how and why it should be done vist.ly/5mce2

LBC's Matthew Wright confessed to being 'a bit wobbly' on the case for public ownership of water. So we told him. 1/3 of your water bill is dribbling out to service debts and line shareholder pockets. That's money that could be reinvested in improving the service. Public ownership's a no-brainer.
