I didn’t want it this to be the case. It was my favorite game at SGF. But it’s further proof that preview builds typically show off a game at its finest. Control Resonant is mid.

I of all people feel this considering I’ve been chewed up and spit out by a huge company. But the vibe is a little different when your work is a non-profit that brings games to hospitals. 🥲

Even if my site was on Metacritic, I’d have the same opinion. Tenure should be a part of the merit to qualify these publications. I can guarantee not every site on there has been around as long as we have. That should matter.

And the sad part of all this is, your site can only gain prominence from being aggregated. If it were up to me, there wouldn’t be scores. Unfortunately, that’s what gets the clicks. But you can’t get the clicks if you’re not provided what you need to write for those clicks.

If you’re running a game site, whether paid or not, your life blood is going to be getting previews. When we can’t, we rely on events like Steam Next Fest, so indies can get their deserved attention. Previews are the path to getting the codes we need to stay current and get on an aggregator.

At SmashPad, we played the song of dance of being owned. We got spit out. We kept our staff motivated despite no pay, and it took YEARS of grinding to get where we are today. We didn’t see real growth until we got lucky with an SGF invite, which we earned by grinding and staying consistent.

If I’m out of line, it is what it is. But developers and publishers, especially new ones, limiting their review codes of games to outlets that are on Metacritic is a beyond ass backwards way to approach pitching. A lot of those sites are owned by entities that will drop writers for no reason.
