Research does sometimes feel like that.

Just got a photo of the new archive under construction. Looks good. Great climate control.

Have you ever wanted to decipher historic handwriting? We’re running two workshops on palaeography, the art of reading historical documents!

Spaces are limited, so make sure you book yours by heading to histfestbucks.co.uk

For #MKMonday, here's a 1979 poster for a production of 'The Dalkey Archive', performed by Hull Truck Theatre Company. This is a great poster, and also an accurate depiction of how conservators look after a long day of bookbinding.

A photo of a poster on a wooden archive table. The poster is for 'The Dalkey Archive', originally written by Flann O'Brien. The poster shows an illustration of a spindly, balding man sewing a patch onto his clothing. In the background, a pot boils on the stove.

The text lists the person who adapted it to the stage (Allan McClelland), the director (Mike Bradwell) and the designer (Gemma Jackson). The text at the bottom of the image is printed, showing that it was performed at the Jennie Lee Theatre, Bletchley Leisure Centre from the 30th of January to the 3rd of February in 1979. At the top of the image it shows the production company, Hull Truck Theatre.

There is a Barry, 63, that lurks in the darkest parts of all of our hearts.

@bucksarchives.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 2:14 PM

Simple as.

@bucksarchives.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 2:12 PM

Bosh.

Barry, 63, from those memes (usually a red faced white man wearing a button up shirt, holding a big pint of beer with a very pleased expression on his face). This one has been edited to replace his face with the 3000 year old Chinese axe head.

If you don't know anyone that looks like a 3000 year old Chinese ceremonial bronze axe head, we've got some bad news for you.

You can find a guy that looks like this in every pub in the UK

You think we'd let a nerd like that in?

@bucksarchives.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 2:15 PM

We have no documents about The Hansa but sometimes a good (bad) pun calls out to us like the Green Goblin mask and we have to indulge this dark urge

@bucksarchives.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 1:57 PM

Exactly. We're archivists, not octopusivists.

@bucksarchives.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 12:58 PM

We've always thought that was just carp from the canals.

@bucksarchives.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 12:02 PM

Hey if we had a magic pocket watch it'd make our jobs a lot easier.

@bucksarchives.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 10:58 AM

"But Buckinghamshire Archives, squid and octopuses are different!" Listen buddy we're a landlocked county, most of us have never seen a saltwater fish before

It's #WorldOctopusDay! Here's an 1861 clipping from the London Illustrated Times of 'A Marine Monster Discovered Near Teneriffe'.

From the description, it's likely that this was a giant squid rather than an octopus, but it's described as a 'giant polypus' by the crew.

A clipping from the London Illustrated News of a short article with a large illustration, showing a huge squid-like creature with one massive eye being ensnared by a net and dragged towards a ship. The crew watch on, shocked.
