That's a good argument. And it's got Bad Moon Rising, which I alluded to when I talked about Marcus Rowland in the GW section. Looking at my notes, though, I see GOO is actually in the next chapter anyway. Chapter 5 is 1986-1988, with 1989 and 4e and GOO then being the next one.

I would love to see it! Anything related to goals, intents, points of views, philosophies, etc. is the best, but I find little scraps of history to talk about everywhere. (I should send you chapter 4, there's a couple of paragraphs on France, including Chroniques d’outre-monde)

@shannonappelcline.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 10:58 PM

No, Kevin's work just barely touches the 80s with contributions to Great Old Ones. Chapter 6 will talk about Kingsport and Escape from Innsmouth. (And so, give more attention to Kevin's great work.) (Scott & Michael meanwhile headlined Terror from the Stars, which will lead off the chapter.)

It's a very innovative era for Call of Cthulhu, but by the end Chaosium is so weak they've practically stopped publication. The only answer? To set RuneQuest to the side, because it's mortally wounded by their design-house deal, making Call of Cthulhu their top RPG.

@shannonappelcline.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 9:32 PM

Chapter 5 of Losing Sanity will cover the latter half of the 80s. 1 Chaosium kills their business model by trying to become a design house. 2 They expand CoC with Dreamlands, Gaslight, and Now. 3 Arkham Horror kicks off co-op gaming. 4. Aniolowski, Herber, and Szymanski produce works of note

Mission accomplished. There are even some nice (but brief) design notes to inform the writing of chapter 5. Thanks!

Alright. Stop posting. It's a beautiful day, and I've already got my bike loaded up on my car. But I found the Bridwell comic in the mailbox on the way out, and the note brought me up short.

Oh, and another note on _The Fires of December, the Dragonsteel (Brandon Sanderson) book. I just adore how much he's focused on making these books into objects of art. I'm a bibliophile, and they're amazing. (I hate that the Hawaiian environ damages them with humidity and bugs, but so it goes.)

These are the other bookmarks I frequently use, from our 2014 crowdfunding of Designers & Dragons.

Some bookmarks for Designers & Dragons.

Mail call! Got two Kickstarter rewards the last two days. Dunno which I like more, the gorgeous, sturdy bookmarks I keep getting with my Dragonsteel books or the quick handwritten note with my E. Nelson Bridwell graphic history. Both appreciated, and nice easy add-ons to crowdfunding!

Gorgeous cover to The Fires of December, with a few extra book marks.Cover to E. Nelson Bridwell: First Fan with a hand-written note that says "Thanks for the your support. Enjot the book. Reed [Tucker]."

On October 10, 2018, my temporary mentor Greg Stafford died. Every year, I post my tribute to him. He was the best, I miss him, and I owe him nearly everything even though our direct connection was brief.

Yep! Not looking for the adventure itself, just Keith's unpublished original ending (or at least published-only-on-the-internet ending). Thanks!

@shannonappelcline.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 4:06 AM

Just Keith. He had an original ending that was revised when it got to Chaosium but later published at YSDC.

@shannonappelcline.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 12:40 AM

I'd alternatively be happy to hear what the changes were (any speculation about whether it made it better or worse welcome too!)

@shannonappelcline.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 12:40 AM

My Cthulhu hunt for the day is for Keith Herber's original ending to the Spawn of Azathoth, which got rewritten when it came in house at Chaosium. This is yet another thing that was available at YSDC at one point, but now gone with the site. If anyone has a copy, I'd appreciate it.

Cover to SPAWN OF AZATHOTH: HERALD OF THE END OF TIME. A flying dragon thing fills the front of the frame. An earthlike planet menaced by a nemesis-like flaming planet are behind it.

Not the first time I've heard that the late-stage capitalists at Must Read Books Publishing are screwing the very creatives that their magazines are built upon. They unfortunately also own Analog & F&SF since a 2025 purchase. Time for some new genre mags it seems.

@shannonappelcline.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 10:52 PM

Asimov's SF Magazine (@asimovssfmag) is now trying to force artists into predatory contracts where they steal away all rights. If you're a creator of any type, yes including authors who would like to be published by Asimov's, you should run far, far away.

That's a DDOS attack, which is prosecutable under §1030(a)(5) in the United States and the Computer Misuse Act 1990 in the United Kingdom. But, yeah, AI slopbots act like they don't have to obey the law.
