Companies with massive stakes in decisions before President Trump and his administration gave many millions to the White House ballroom project, which the President has made clear is important to him. So are you confident he'll make those decisions based only on what's good for the American people?

@noahbookbinder.bsky.socialOct 13, 2026, 5:54 PM

Whatever the facts may turn out to be, the conduct of the administration undermines any assertion that this is a legitimate case and makes it more likely that, if there ultimately are charges, they'll get thrown out as improper by a court.

Add to that the fact that the President, the Vice President, and other senior officials have made comments harshly critical of Rep. Omar and have suggested that she engaged in wrongdoing, which further suggests a political agenda here rather than the pursuit of justice.

@noahbookbinder.bsky.socialOct 13, 2026, 5:54 PM

But with this Department, high level officials have encouraged investigations and prosecutions of perceived political opponents, so they are the opposite of a check. The timing truly makes it look like this is done for electoral politics, not in the interest of justice.

In the past, this would have had to go to the Public Integrity Section for approval. When I worked there, I cannot imagine this being approved. But the section has been essentially dismantled. Ordinarily, high level Department officials would have reviewed and been another check against abuse.

@noahbookbinder.bsky.socialOct 13, 2026, 5:54 PM

The timing is just indefensible. The Justice Dept. has a longstanding policy against taking major actions in relation to a candidate within 60 days of an election, which is exactly what they've done here, absent extraordinary circumstances. It's hard to imagine there's any immediate danger here.

I can't evaluate whether there is an actual basis for the investigation. A judge did approve a search warrant, which suggests some real evidence, but that has not always been a foolproof standard in the past, and we haven't seen the warrant. Other aspects are more clear.

As a former federal corruption prosecutor, I can say with confidence that there's a lot in how the government has handled this investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar that is deeply problematic and troubling. A quick breakdown: 🧵

The President bought over $1 million in SpaceX bonds days before issuing a new policy that is in part intended to strengthen the space industry. Whether this is out-and-out corruption or just a (glaring) appearance of conflict of interest, we have to stop pretending this is in any way acceptable.

Within days of leaving his top White House Latin American policy job, Michael Jensen was helping a crypto billionaire look for oil deals in Venezuela. This is just old school revolving door corruption.

Sometimes pushing back on outrageous corruption works, even with this President.

Jack Smith's investigations and prosecutions were independent, appropriate, and supported by facts and law. The efforts to attack, discredit, and even try to prosecute him are an affront to democracy and accountability. We can't let these efforts to flip the narrative continue to take root.

The President and has family have increasing investments in AI. The President is resisting calls, even from AI industry leaders, for the industry to slow down and address real dangers. Who could imagine any ways the President's financial interests could affect policy decisions or the public good?

President Trump is pushing for lax oversight of prediction markets at the federal and state levels. Also his family is heavily invested in prediction markets. That seems like a problem.

Donald Trump and those who work for him aggressively pushing companies to give millions for pet projects that are important to him, while the president is also directly involved in decisions that affect those companies, is extreme corruption. We should not accept this as the way things are.

Just because it has somehow become commonplace for this President to make billions while serving and using his office to benefit his businesses does not mean that we should ever think it is okay.
