Because judges are employed by the State, and the State doesn’t want people of conscience who dissent against unjust laws to be acquitted. Blocking this principle from jurors, often with threat of prosecution, is corrupt and undemocratic. The jury decides, not the judge. 2/2
Jury Equity Centuries ago, this legal principle enshrined in law the absolute right of jurors to acquit (find not-guilty) a defendant according to their conscience. It’s proudly carved in stone inside the Old Bailey. Yet judges are lying to jurors about this right. Why? 1/2

The centuries-old democratic principle of trial by a jury of one’s peers is not an attempt to “game the system”.

Burnham’s government loathes democratic process.
“courts will have the final say over where cases should be heard, preventing criminals accused of relatively minor crimes trying to game the system by electing a jury trial in an attempt to avoid prison"
The decision has been criticised by @thecriminalbar.bsky.social: the proposals will shift 25,000 cases a year, 5,500 jury trials, on magistrates - including complex assault, sexual assault & child abuse which volunteer magistrates “completely unequipped to try”
