Hello! I'm Lucy, I'm a historian, I write books like biographies of Agatha Christie and present a VERY GOOD @BBCSounds podcast called #LadyKillers. For ages I was Chief Curator of Historic Royal Palaces, now an Ambassador for the charity.

What's your favourite period of history? Tell me in the comments! And follow 😃 so we can talk again 👋 I'm British historian Lucy Worsley! I believe the past is not dead. It is not even past. My job's to travel the world, researching history. (Yeah, I didn't know that was a job either 😉)

Friends, I’ve been on my travels again, which means a round of ‘Which Cathedral?’ for you. Which cathedral is this??

The Bayeux Tapestry's in London, but the last scene in its story is lost.  And I think the real story actually begins where the tapestry ends anyway: with four years of rebellion, York burned, and a famine.
A harrowing story this week, that's free to read:

TOP NIGHT OUT

@lucyworsley.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 11:24 AM

Join me for the tiniest 45-second tour of Hampton Court Palace - to find out some of the ways we can put women back into the story of the past! It’s something I’ve tried to do in my new book QUEENS AND KINGS, AN UNUSUALLY PERSONAL HISTORY, which you can get here:

Yes, that picture bears absolutely no resemblance at all to Jack the Ripper. But I’m fascinated by the fact that if you ask AI to generate a picture of him, every single model does it extremely quickly and confidently and with very little variation between results.

@lucyworsley.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 4:32 PM

The letter that gave us the name ‘Jack the Ripper’ was almost certainly written by a journalist.
But when we filmed it at the National Archives, a criminologist asked me a very good question.
His answer couldn't be included in our documentary, but here it is!

Every 19th May, roses arrive at the Tower of London for Anne Boleyn.
Nobody puts their name to them, & they've been coming for well over a century.
I have a theory, involving a lawyer's office and an admirer who’s been dead for a long time.
NEW POST😊

I’ve been in Cambridge (thanks so much for your time if you came to my talk!) which means I have a Cambridge version of ‘Which College?’ for you to play. It’s a college whose archives I visited for my PhD research back in the day. Do you know … which college … this is?!

I’m slightly nonplussed by a family member asking me if I can please keep my witch’s hat somewhere other than the corner of our living room. Doesn’t everyone keep their witch’s hat in the corner of the living room?

Two strangers at Notre-Dame told me they’d come because of my programmes and hoped I’d be there.
As if I live in the bell tower!
It was my first time back since the reopening, and it’s glorious.
But one thing about it bothers me.

If you were to take the cost of my labour into account the value of each single cherry tomato should be £12.50. But the satisfaction of finally getting to gorge on them is priceless.

@lucyworsley.bsky.socialSep 27, 2026, 3:01 PM

This apparently meant they thought they could go on happily growing leaves and not bother with the fruit. Treat ‘em mean, keep ‘em keen. After cutting back on watering, I now have almost too many tomatoes.

@lucyworsley.bsky.socialSep 27, 2026, 3:01 PM

After a very sloooow start, my tomatoes are finally getting down to business and going red. I’ve been told they might have been tardy because I watered them too assiduously during the hot spell.

A very great treat to be on Saturday Live on @bbcradio4 today, talking about QUEENS AND KINGS, AN UNUSUALLY PERSONAL HISTORY. I’ve been on this show many times over the years, and it’s always a been privilege to meet the other contributors. Listen here via the link👇

I once threw a book on the floor and stamped on it. A critic had dismissed GAUDY NIGHT as a 'woman's novel'.

Dorothy L. Sayers, spent her life being told a clever woman was too much. But she it turns out she was hiding something bigger than a bad review…

From Anne Boleyn to Elizabeth I (of course she's in), via some surprising faces and one notable imperial absence… there's been a lot to cover.
Which queen or king are you most desperate to read about?! Tell me in the comments! You can order the book here👇❤️🙏

In or out? I've been playing this game with some of history's most extraordinary monarchs — and you might notice I look suspiciously familiar in a few of these pictures. Purely a coincidence, I'm sure. My new book QUEENS AND KINGS is my love letter to the rulers who fascinated and frustrated me.

I think the world needs to know about these SOCKS WITH BERTIE THE CAT’S FACE ON THEM! Thanks to my friend Katherine for a wonderful gift.

Includes a rather scandalous sighting of a lady detective’s ankles too.
