The key art of The Sea is Our Stage by @ahoguru, featuring Theo (left) and Arianne Reinard (right), both floating on their backs in water and looking at each other fondly. Behind Arianne, there is blood rippling in the water. In front of the key art, the logo for The Sea is Our Stage is shown, as well as text that reads: "AVAILABLE FOR FREE NOVEMBER 10TH 2026" with the Steam and itch.io logos shown beneath. Easily my favorite detail:

There was the incident that became known as "the Lauren error": One day, her daughter Lauren, then four years old, was playing with
the command module simulator at the Instrumentation Lab when she somehow activated a pre-launch program, called P01, while the simulator was in midflight β€” which crashed the simulator altogether. Hamilton created a program add-on in the technical documentation warning users not to launch
P01 during flight. She also proposed a software fix to prevent the error happening during a real mission, but she was overruled on the grounds that the highly trained astronauts were never going to make that same mistake. Yet during the Apollo 8 mission in 1968, that's exactly what happened: Jim Lovell inadvertently launched P01 during the flight, causing the on-flight navigational data to vanish. Hamilton and her team were called in to solve the error, and after that her proposed changes were
integrated into the program.

thanks Dylan for the shoutout! (btw, if you're interested in vaporwave specifically, Transmission Control and PC LOVE LETTER are my takes on it, or more specifically "what can i do within this sampling-heavy genre while only sampling my own work")

tbh i think the main reason i stopped following to the stars was that i'd caught up with it and updates were fairly slow, so adhd did its thing and my attention drifted away. i remember liking a lot of the ideas it has, though

@esselfortium.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 6:32 PM

last and first idol is... something. i feel like it's mostly notable because of how surprising it is that something with that origin would abandon any pretense of having characters or a narrative to the stars got a bit convoluted for me to keep up with after a while, but it had some great moments

@esselfortium.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 6:12 PM

it's so good! the pillows were on an incredible streak throughout that entire period, but lostman and runners high are the biggest standouts to me. oh right, and living field, and (etc etc, you get the idea)

It’s Doom 2’s birthday, so you gotta celebrate by playing a mod which demonstrates how far the community has come: Check out ZDoom Wars 2, (powered by @uzdoom.bsky.social ), an FPS/RTS hybrid where you make big armies and absolutely trash each other.

i also recently did the 9 anime list. (it's a formative list, not a favorites list.)

- end of eva: one of my all-time favorite films. seeing it in the theater was the closest thing i've ever had to a religious experience, and it's also what brought heather and i together.
- cowboy bebop: the first anime to make me really take notice of the medium when i was younger, as well as probably the first time i really fixated on a tv or film soundtrack.
- eupho: look, it's a formative list, not a favorites list. but the way it ended couldn't have crushed me as badly as it did if its characters hadn't thoroughly wormed their way into my soul and made a home there over the preceding decade. i think this was the first anime to give me terminal yuri brain.
- spirited away: vivid memories of seeing this in the theater in 2003 are still imprinted on me. incredible, evocative film that i think has echoed in my imagination ever since.
- rebellion: this film is the reason pmmm as a whole managed to displace evangelion as my favorite work of all time. it's beautiful, it's cathartic, it questions everything that was giving me pause about the original ending, and any time i go to pull up a single scene from it i end up watching the entire movie and crying.- flcl: i think i watched this at least 30 times in its entirety when i was 14, it was an extremely formative influence on my concept of what animation and music could be. i can probably still quote every line from the first episode. one of the rare cases where style and spectacle manage to outweigh narrative for me. it also cemented the pillows as one of my favorite bands.
- nichijou: to me, this is still the perfect comedy anime. not every joke lands, but the contrast of madcap and sometimes extremely surrealist humor set against quiet pastoral moments and heartfelt character arcs made it land extremely powerfully for me and made me feel a lot of things beyond just laughter.
- interlude: discovering this bewildering ova at probably 3 in the morning at heather's place years ago definitely altered my brain chemistry forever. here's another one i can probably quote every word of.
- welcome to the nhk: this was one of the first anime that heather introduced me to in the early 2010s, so it's inherently tied to memories of the start of our relationship, as well as being one of the works that got me interested again in seeing new anime that i hadn't already been obsessed over for years. it was also probably the first time i gave a fair chance to something that was so unapologetically "otaku-brained".

i did the 9 albums thing. i went with ones that have influenced and impacted me most in my life, rather than just current favorites.

- the moody blues - this is the moody blues: yep, it's a greatest hits record. it was a tie between this and a doo-wop compilation for the music that impacted me most when i was a kid, but i'd say the moody blues' mellotron-assisted orchestral rock had the bigger influence on me overall. (for a favorite moody blues *album*, these days i'd pick seventh sojourn or to our children's children's children.)
- moby - play: this was arguably *the* album that convinced me i wanted to make electronic music (well, this and eiffel 65...), and it kept teaching me more and more valuable lessons over the subsequent years once i started making my own.
- danger mouse - the grey album: somehow this mashup album was my first real exposure to the beatles *and* to hiphop music as a whole. i still can't hear either of its source albums without danger mouse's remixes coming to mind. this album opened up my musical horizons a lot as a young teenager.
- rancid - ...and out come the wolves: i grew up pretty sheltered with essentially no exposure to contemporary music, but sometime in elementary school, a very cool babysitter made me a tape copy of (most of) this punk album and i was instantly hooked.
- radiohead - kid a: i could've just as easily put ok computer or amnesiac here for how influential radiohead has been on me, but i think kid a did the most for my conception of "what an album can be". defiantly unconventional, abstract and dreamy, full of surprises, and just cool as hell.- guided by voices - bee thousand: the beginning of my pollard obsession, which has influenced my own songwriting in countless ways since, including my love of through-composed structures. this one's a playful and compellingly mysterious record full of lo-fi home recordings, strange sounds, and an endless supply of hooks.
- rewrite original soundtrack: arguably a big part of the reason i got into visual novel composing in the first place. this one is the rosetta stone of influences for heart of the woods and so many other visual novel soundtracks i've worked on. ryou mizutsuki and maiko iuchi's works here in particular were hugely influential as i was finding my own musical voice in territories that were new to me.
- the pillows - please mr lostman: this album carries so much of the melancholy i love in music, and its dreamy sound predicted other favorites of mine like gbv's earthquake glue. the pillows were my first "favorite band", and they're still way up there for me.
- boards of canada - music has the right to children: i couldn't possibly count the number of hours i spent as a teenager and young adult trying to replicate sounds i heard on this record and emotions i felt from it. the secret to my own vaporwave composing is that it's far more boards of canada than macintosh plus.

it would've helped. the first season wasn't exactly good either, but as the series went on it got increasingly desperate, and the weekly seat-of-the-pants writing started to really show

@esselfortium.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 2:09 AM

this is also kinda what happened with the show 24

@esselfortium.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 1:54 AM

i hope they do
