51 x 16
(50 + 1)(10 + 6)
500 + 6•50 + 10 + 6
500 + 300 + 16
816
^^Decompose & Distribute
or
51 x 16
102 x 8
(100 + 2)•8
800 + 16
816
^^Double & Halve
or
51 x 16
3 x 17 x 16
I know 16•16 = 256, so 17•16 = 256 + 16 = 272
3 x 272
3•(200 + 70 + 2)
600 + 210 + 6
816

Dislike for you. Sorry the joy isn't there anymore.

Yup. Is this from a text or from an AP CED?

Howie this is my favorite topic!! I really appreciate you giving a context for each, so helpful. Looking forward to your next harmonic mean video!!

Coffee is life. Back then I had a mug on my desk: "Will Teach Math For Coffee" My son enjoyed the reminder game & I never forgot the coffee again...

When my son was 2, I'd drop him at daycare before my high school teaching day started. One day, left the travel coffee mug home. Then taught the kid to remind me about coffee before leaving house!!

How about having your kids taught by someone you used to teach...

Thanks Howie for always explaining why it works.

That is definitely a TURD -- truly unfortunate representation of data. 🤪

@karencampe.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 2:29 PM

It's essentially a vector, is there some way to have a "show complex vector" toggle??

@karencampe.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 2:28 PM

Yeah and I think the middle school teachers here over-use parentheses because it is lesser of 2 evils: Ss will get integer operations correct so (-5)(-4) vs -5•-4... ultimately parens are used to ensure multiplication.

Oh yes, I had a discussion with my kid's 2nd grade T; kid did 42 – 18 as 30 and -6 which was 24. Teacher wasn't having it.

Ryan, great conversation tonight. Glad I joined! Thank you.

So many "Problems with Parentheses" in secondary math...

In my school district, there's a trend of overusing parentheses / brackets in middle school.* Kids arrive in HS thinking parentheses are necessary. I drop them from expressions whenever they aren't doing something mathematically important. *some good reasons to use for integer & fraction operations

That's why I still have a box of the math books.
