When does it still make sense to use microservices; and what are mental models to keep in mind when building resilient distributed systems? With Sam Newman, author of Building Microservices, and the fresh release Building Resilient Distributed Systems:

My keynote at LDX3 New York, "The state of the tech industry in 2026," is now available to watch (and read!) online here: newsletter.pragmaticengineer.com/p/the-state-...

You can also watch it on YouTube, here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ru99...

It's a summary of what I observed change in ~12 months.

If you want to read the speicifc post, here it is: archestra.ai/blog/routing...

Pretty clear the dev just asked Claude or GPT to write a post based on some experiment it did. The result is horrendous, and impossible to read... SO BAD

and no one noticed?!!

@gergely.pragmaticengineer.comOct 6, 2026, 10:21 AM

Baffling how bad startup tech blogs are getting: more of them are AI nonsense. I know because every now and then a marketer emails me, hoping to get coverage. More of then not it's overly verbose, impossible to follow... AI slop. Feels like no one wants to put in the work

The cost of introducing and paying off tech debt has changed very, very much and I don't even know most of us have the time and space to think about what it means Tech debt has been so central to the software craft for decades, and now... how much does it matter?

yes, great point!

it sped up iteration speed many, many times, and the teams that did agile (not capital A) got to CD amusingly quickly - from the state of shipping software 1-2x per year (seen that)

Brought to you by WorkOS – fresh from the WorkOS oven: Airlock, the authorization layer for AI agents. It evaluates every request against the agent’s intent and your rules and either allows it, denies it, or routes it to a human for approval. Works w CC, Codex and MCP gateways. workos.com/airlock

Peter Mattis has quite the history in shipping large-scale, production sw: he created GIMP, built Gmail’s original backend, shipped Google’s Colossus distributed backend stroage system, and is the cofounder and CTO at Cockroach Labs, the makers of CockroachDB. A convo on distributed DBs: (cont'd)

The last time building software sped up ~10x (early 2000s, the agile movement), a massive interest in automated testing followed almost immediately (unit tests, TDD, XP etc) Today, building software sped up 10x, easily: and a similar massive interest in automated testing + verification is following

Very much enjoying this “GPU glossary” mini-book by Modal I got from Can Duruk when stopping by at Modal’s NYC office.

I don’t know if the physical books can be purchased, but the book has an online version, as I learned; with the same contents: modal.com/gpu-glossary

really good point amusing when history rhymes!

@gergely.pragmaticengineer.comSep 25, 2026, 3:02 PM

Oh WOW. I was going through my "outdated" (aka old) books and look what I found: the TypeScript book I bought in 2019 to get up to speed with the language. Only now realizing who the author is: Boris Cherny, widely known as the creator of Claude Code. Was a great writer + educator before :)

Quote from 1982, from James Martin, in the book Application Development Without Programmers

@gergely.pragmaticengineer.comSep 25, 2026, 6:22 AM

"Application development did not change much for 20 years, but now, a new wave is crashing in. Most computers in the future must be put to work at least in part w/o programmers. Not surprisingly, programmers will instinctively resist methods described in this book." - 1982, James Martin (cont'd)

That DHH saying out loud that the age of writing code by hand is over for the industry, and causing such an uproar is a bit interesting, given this was clear enough since ~January for most of us using the models + paying attention.
