Finished John Gibbons book ‘The lie of the land’ (@thinkorswim.bsky.social) last week. It’s hard to overstate how important a book this is for anyone that cares about this island 🇼đŸ‡Ș. John has truly done and continues to do this country a great service. A brilliant & important book.

The covers of two books. Red one to the left, The Nerd Reich by Gil Duran and to the right, The Lie of the Land by John gibbons featuring a cows head.

Joe, I get to do exactly what I like, as of course do you. I don’t owe you squat and yes, you’re coming off like a crank, including attempts at sarcasm. I have no interest in continuing to engage, so please take a hint and leave me alone.

@thinkorswim.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 12:44 PM

For sure. By any measure, SF is at least as regressive on environmental issues as FFG, so that’s where we’re at politically, alas.

@thinkorswim.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 12:42 PM

Thanks for your feedback Joe. Let’s leave it at that. I’m sure we both have better things to do than this.

@thinkorswim.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 10:45 AM

Good luck sourcing committed, courageous leadership in the current DĂĄil.

@thinkorswim.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 10:44 AM

If you’re low income as you say & in a cold old house you’re probably eligible for a full retrofit, free of charge, funded by
carbon taxes. But now that carbon tax has been killed, bang goes your free retrofit & instead let’s just keep burning stuff till the climate collapses and we’re all stuffed.

@thinkorswim.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 7:56 AM

That’s your opinion Joe, and you’re as entitled to it as anyone else is to theirs.

@thinkorswim.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 1:21 PM

“dead dog factory” Lol.

@thinkorswim.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 1:17 PM

Likewise. It was precious.

@thinkorswim.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 12:23 PM

Let’s see.

Sparks flew on this week's Last Word on the Environment as I lambasted this govt's spineless u-turn on carbon taxes in #Budget2027 and its unforgivable backsliding on #climate, as the world literally burns.

Ireland & Council of the EU are pushing the 'Omnibus' proposal that will increase pesticide risks to the public and nature. Scientists have been ringing the alarm but the politicians pushing it —Fine Gael (EPP) and Fianna Fáil (Renew)—would rather listen to chemicals & agri-food industry lobbyists.

Screenshot of first page text from the 25 June 2026 Science journal article, 'EU Omnibus proposal increases pesticide risks', by Wintermantel et al..

Text highlighted (by Paul Price):

"Here, we explain how implementing the Omnibus package would amplify rather than resolve shortcomings of current environmental risk assessment. This would jeopardize the Omnibus’s goal to maintain high standards for the protection of human and environmental health, as well as the EU’s long-term environmental objectives and international commitments to restore ecosystems."

"We provide actionable recommendations for improving environmental risk assessment for stronger biodiversity protection while limiting regulatory burden."

"The Omnibus proposal’s amendments to Regulation 1107/2009 would exacerbate shortcomings of the current environmental risk assessment and approval system"

"This would raise the prospect of aforementioned risk assessment gaps and leave many substances untested under new methodologies..."

"Unlike time-bound renewals, all three leave discretion over how many and which substances are assessed, creating room for political or economic considerations to influence reassessment decisions. As the stated goal of the Omnibus is reducing regulatory burden, the overall volume of assessment would likely be considerably reduced."

"The Omnibus specifies criteria for selecting substances for renewal or targeted reassessment, but these would neither make reassessment obligatory nor function as effective triggers."

"Rather than fostering sustainability and innovation, as claimed in the Omnibus, the removal of time-bound substance renewals would slow the identification of harmful substances and prolong their use"

This week's Last Word on the Environment with Matt Cooper coming up shortly on TodayFM. We'll be discussing #Budget2027, including scrapping of carbon taxes, plus 'forever chemicals' in our waterways – and more.

@thinkorswim.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 2:02 PM

For sure.

@thinkorswim.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 12:29 PM

Thought for a moment that Simon Harris had completely forgotten #climate, but my mistake, he has also demolished the carbon tax, one of the most successful cross-party eco initiatives in recent years.

Always slightly sceptical of folks who can’t spell ‘hypocrisy’

@thinkorswim.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 11:23 AM

Thanks Adrian.

Ideally, yes, but electricity is so much more efficient than ICE there are gains anyway
