Hate and Islamophobia have no place in political leadership. Interim BC Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson must hold his party accountable and immediately remove campaign director Katy Merrifield. People in British Columbia deserve leadership that rejects prejudice and division.

Screenshot of a media release from MP Jenny Kwan dated October 10, 2026, titled "MP Jenny Kwan Demands Immediate Removal of Katy Merrifield Over Islamophobic Posts."
The release details MP Kwan's statement calling on interim BC Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson to immediately fire campaign director Katy Merrifield following unaddressed Islamophobic social media posts that target and stigmatize the Muslim community. Kwan emphasizes that political leaders have a responsibility to foster respect and inclusion rather than amplify prejudice, referencing concerns raised by the National Council of Canadian Muslims and urging decisive action during the provincial election campaign.

Minister Diab’s total lack of leadership and basic knowledge of Canada’s refugee framework is hurting families, exacerbating processing delays, and undermining our immigration system. Prime Minister Carney must fire Minister Diab immediately—our immigration system needs a reset.

Statement from MP Jenny Kwan calling on Prime Minister Carney to fire Immigration Minister Lena Diab over failures in leadership, including ignorance of the landmark Singh ruling, policy missteps, cuts to immigration levels, and mounting processing delays.

Pre-approving projects before environmental reviews are completed is reckless. You cannot undo damage to ecosystems or reverse extinction after the fact—the government must protect our environment, not bypass safeguards.

Screenshot of an official parliamentary debate excerpt regarding Bill C-39 (Building Canada Strong Act) from October 6, 2026.
The image shows comments from two Members of Parliament:
* Jean-Denis Garon (Bloc, Mirabel, QC): Expresses concern that Bill C-39 allows the government to pre-approve projects, such as pipelines, before environmental and safety reviews are completed, potentially causing significant harm to health, safety, and the environment.
* Jenny Kwan (NDP, Vancouver East, BC): Agrees, emphasizing that preemptive approvals undermine environmental safeguards, noting that ecosystem damage and species extinction cannot be undone once the harm is done. ✅

Selling off Canada’s public infrastructure won't lower costs or build a fairer future for working families—it just guarantees higher corporate profits.

You don’t build a stronger country by selling it off.

Bill C-233 was defeated 295–22 by Liberal MPs on 11/3 before it could reach committee. Liberal Sean Casey was later removed as Parliamentary Secretary after supporting it. Why does Canada still have loopholes in its arms-export regime? Watch former Canadian Ambassador to the UN Allan Rock explain.

Liberal MP Sean Casey was demoted by Mark Carney last week after voting in favour of Jenny Kwan’s Bill C-233, the No More Loopholes Act. When will the Liberals stop punishing MPs for doing their job—and finally act to close this loophole?

5/If the govt’s free-vote designation for C-233 was withdrawn just hours before vote, Canadians deserve to know why and who made that decision. One Liberal MP told me: “I was made aware that it was no longer in effect hours before the vote on March 11.” Parliamentary democracy requires transparency.

@jennykwan.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 11:21 PM

4/ My Bill C-233 aimed to close US arms loopholes. Bill was defeated, but the principle stands: Canada needs transparent, enforceable arms-export rules—MPs must be free to speak/bote without fear of political consequences.

@jennykwan.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 11:09 PM

3/MPs are elected to represent their constituents and exercise their judgment in Parl. When a govt position or appointment can be affected by how an MP votes on a PMB, Canadians have every right to ask whether MPs are truly free to vote according to their conscience. That matters for our democracy.

@jennykwan.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 11:00 PM

2./C-233 was about a simple principle: Canada’s arms export rules should mean what they say. I thank the MPs who supported the bill—including Sean Casey—for standing up for stronger accountability and respect for Canada’s export-control regime. Parliament must be able to hold government to account.

@jennykwan.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 10:44 PM

1/A Parl Secretary should be able to vote according to their conscience.
Sean Casey supported my C-233, which sought to close a loophole in Canada’s arms export controls.
If MPs face consequences for exercising independent judgment, what does a “free vote” actually mean?

I welcome the cancellation of this contract, but why was it authorized in the first place?

Canadians deserve to know who approved this $1.3B procurement failure, how much tax dollars were wasted, and how we will ensure it never happens again.

It is completely unacceptable that people with legitimate claims to Canadian citizenship are trapped in limbo for nearly three years waiting for citizenship certificates.
Families can’t wait 33 months to travel, work, study, or plan their lives.

My open letter demanding urgent action on eTA refusal for Egyptian journalist & scholar Hossam el-Hamalawy. He was invited to speak at SFU. IRCC asks him to get papers from the Egyptian regime he fled. Canada must defend academic freedom and support human rights defenders. Min Diab must intervene.

An official House of Commons open letter from MP Jenny Kwan (Vancouver East) dated August 31, 2026, addressed to Immigration Minister Lena Diab. The letter requests urgent intervention to facilitate entry for Egyptian journalist, scholar, and human rights advocate Hossam el-Hamalawy. It outlines that el-Hamalawy, a German citizen in exile, was invited by SFU faculty for lectures in September but was denied an eTA after IRCC requested documentation from the Egyptian government regarding his past political detention and persecution.Page 2 of MP Jenny Kwan’s open letter to Minister Diab. Kwan emphasizes that requiring a political exile to seek documentation from the regime that persecuted him compromises his safety. She highlights Canada’s commitments to human rights, press freedom, and academic freedom, urging the Minister to exercise discretion, reconsider the eTA refusal, and provide an authorization pathway before the September SFU events.Page 3 of MP Jenny Kwan’s open letter, concluding with a request for a prompt response from the Minister detailing steps to resolve the issue, signed by Jenny Kwan, MP for Vancouver East.

Calling on Carney and Hajdu to respect workers’ constitutional right to free collective bargaining and not intervene with the process. The NDP stands in solidarity with workers for a fair comprehensive collective agreement.

Carney must stop hiding behind carefully worded statements and should take concrete action: support Judge Prost, oppose US extraterritorial sanctions against Canadians, and lead international efforts to defend the ICC. Canada's credibility—and future of international justice—depends on it. 7/

Bailing out developers by using public funds to buy unabsorbed condos is the wrong approach to the housing crisis. It’s an investment banker’s plan that ignores root causes. Canadians deserve a strategy focused on affordable supply, not developer profits. Read my full statement.

Text screenshot of an official statement from NDP Housing Critic Jenny Kwan, titled "NDP Housing Critic Jenny Kwan Statement on Government Spin on the 'Condo Conversion' Program."
In the statement, Kwan criticizes the federal and BC governments for using $1.713 billion in public funds to purchase distressed, unabsorbed private condominium units to bail out developers, rather than investing in new affordable housing or supporting non-profit and co-op housing providers. She notes this decision follows the indefinite suspension of BC's Community Housing Fund.
Kwan calls the program an "investment banker's plan" that prioritizes investors over first-time homebuyers, pointing out that Bill C-26 contains no affordability targets or safeguards. She highlights NDP-proposed alternatives, such as ending special tax treatment for Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), tackling speculation, and introducing progressively higher down payment requirements for multiple properties.
The statement concludes with seven accountability questions for the government regarding market impacts, a lack of affordability requirements, the decision not to extend the foreign buyer ban, and whether the Parliamentary Budget Office will independently review the proposal.

Fed govt’s sudden reversal on “Lost Canadians” citizenship certificates raises serious questions about fairness & reliability at IRCC. Families shouldn't face agonizing uncertainty over valid documents. They deserve to know their status is secure and verified.

The Libs are using their new "Build Canada Homes" agency to buy & convert 2,200 unsold private condos in BC.
Public funds should build deeply affordable, non-market social & co-op housing—not act as a safety net for corporate developers who overspeculated. 👇

Carney continued delay in implementing foreign influence transparency registry is leaving Canada dangerously vulnerable. 2 year since C-70 was passed, still no registry & no commissioner. Need action now to protect Canadians & safeguard democratic institutions.
