I watched this one last year and it's terrific. A shame we missed out on the TV series.

You just have to dispense with that notion entirely. The characters are being reincarnated along the lines of the actors, and the birthmark motif just represents the human spirit or whatever. There is no longer a single 'main' soul moving along the path.

The payoff to the dolls is sublime.

Nice to see all the Nick Cage love (yes, that is his preferred spelling of his shortened first name) on the feed today. A true thoughtful artist, whose movies vary wildly in quality, but his performances in those movies are *always* intentional, interesting, and worthy of deep appreciation.

Gets a little wobblier/sillier as Kingfisher keeps pulling back the scope to reveal more and more of what's going on, but when you're locked in alone in the woods or in a small cabin at night, it's as breathless and terrifying as horror can be.

Maybe a hot take: “cosmic horror” only works in small doses, with a novella being the maximum length sustainable. If you go to novel/feature length, it inevitably crosses from scary to silly.
