Award winning science fiction author. Cat furniture. Horse patsy. Almost certainly two ornimegalonyxes in a trenchcoat.

Listen to John. John is wise.

Oh hey. Ours too. Congrats!

So many of us have shown them what acceptable looks like.

I'm so furious this is so going on. I have a story coming out with them next year, and did negotiate an acceptable contract, but I suspect it will be the last thing I work with them on. They keep saying, "Oh, we're fixing it" and not fixing it.

Sidling up like hey, Babe

I actually like several of the songs, and find myself frequently quoting a couple of lines to this day: "There are no more assholes!" "There will ALWAYS be assholes!" And "And it's such a bloody drag to have to rebuild civilization all over AGAIN."

So do I! But I've always been irrationally fond of the not very good Starship album Nuclear Furniture, a concept album about armageddon, which includes a song that has a list of things that don't exist after a nuclear war. Including the line "they didn't touch Cleveland." So I cheated.

@matociquala.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 2:47 AM

Anyway, the whole thing was pretty carefully calculated to fuck up the region I needed fucked up for plot reasons. I absolutely admit I just threw Cleveland into the blast radius as a Jefferson Starship joke and it would have been largely unaffected in reality. Maybe a fragment got it.

Especially given that everything in Toronto and Buffalo is not built to earthquake spec, so a 7 or so is gonna fuck shit up. The water's only thirty meters or so deep where it hit, so really that just makes the climate effects a bit worse.

@matociquala.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 2:47 AM

Not to mention the seismic and tsunami effects, which are significant.

The rock in this case is nickel-iron and the angle of incidence is about 90 degrees because it's an intentional weapon.

James is welcome to take it up with the two different physicists who checked my math, but they're probably busy. Anyway, I kind of assumed the protagonists added some velocity to the thing when they started fucking with it.

Thank you.

"Mind you, I don't know whether you've ever really considered the advantages of owning a really fine set of modern encyclopedias."

@matociquala.bsky.socialOct 3, 2026, 10:18 PM

Yeah, no, she's still horrible. Just, you know, less horrible than say, Mitch.

For the weekend crowd
