“Think infill” I did, thanks. I’m happy with my position. Your favoured party just held a mirror to my city, though. Not the progressive place it likes to think it is. Actually quite conservative.

Should Danielle Smith be able to order your local council to vote to approve rezoning for a massive AI data centre? And threaten to fire your democratically elected mayor if they vote against it? This latest provincial overreach isn't about density. It's about your legal right to a fair hearing.

Specifically for Alberta, the after referendum reality will be Alberta but at 1.5 speed and max volume.

Alberta politics over the past decade have been absolutely wild. But I suspect they will look tame relative to the next few years.

They’re both carrying the same number of people - and probably the same amount of cargo.

"Mature neighbourhoods as a whole have 67,000 fewer people living there than in 1971." "72 per cent of new row homes are within walking distance of the LRT or a frequent bus line." "new three-bedroom row homes in desirable neighbourhoods going for as little as $1,700"

A bit early for a $1.8-billion investment to look like this, no?

It's 2:45am and I finally finished a long essay for a U.K. magazine. By Oct. 19, I will be properly exhausted by this referendum.

Remember, you can’t force everyone in your neighbourhood to come from a certain socioeconomic class and get political support for that in 2026, but you can if you demand every multifamily building have upscale finishes and design that raises the price of entry.

@timquerengesser.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 5:21 PM

Yeah. I often reflect to many years ago when one of the most prominent anti development voices was a now former NDP MP in Strathcona. "How do you want to solve climate change if you can't accept more density in your central neighbourhood?" was the question I never got to ask that person.

First public comments from an ABNDP MLA on the infill topic as far as I know.

The progressive left is inside a slow shift from preserving things in amber to creating a more dynamic world but the growing pains are clearly going to be really tough. I am heartened by what I am seeing from people like Mamdani who pair helping people with growing the community.

@timquerengesser.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 3:25 PM

TFW you say you want change but you’re fully aligned with local columnist. “I don’t love Danielle Smith’s government interfering in municipal affairs. But …”

@timquerengesser.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 3:21 PM

Seriously, though — cut the lawn-sign activism and start the accepting change part.

@timquerengesser.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 2:58 PM

Today in great news!

@timquerengesser.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 1:43 AM

Interesting. I’ll have a look.

@timquerengesser.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 10:52 PM

I'm not expecting it to happen.

Hey. Let me know when the Alberta NDP put out a statement forcefully defending Edmonton’s autonomy over zoning and speaking up for housing-friendly policy.

Haven’t see it yet.

@albertandp.ca ?

@timquerengesser.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 10:15 PM

Where I'm at now: If our politics really are based in self interest in Edmonton and we’re not willing for the things we say we want (more housing!) to actually affect us (not there, not like that, too big), we could probably save time and energy and just vote that way, too. Less lawn signs, too.
