was in 1997. Don't freak out. *Do* ask yourself when your last Tdap booster was. In the US (& Canada), adults should be getting them every 10 yrs. (at your doctor or pharmacy); per the CDC, pregnant women should get vaxxed/boosted between the "27th through 36th week of each pregnancy, preferably...

CDC graphic on the diphtheria/pertussis/tetnus vax schedule.

Kids/tweens DTaP at 2, 4, & 6 months; 15-18 months; 4-6 years; Tdap at 11-12 years

Adults: Td or Tdap every 20 years.

It doesn't mentioon pregnant adults, but they'll need a dose, too - ask your doctor

I’m in DC scheduled to give this talk today. But the organizers flagged slides in my deck that mention racism, structural gaslighting, New Jim Code and other themes that are off limits in the Land of the Free.

Instead of gun control the health department gave us 8 of these steel lock boxes to give out to parents with guns and suicidal teens.

6-12 months ago the large labs started buying bio data
this spend is starting to ramp very aggressively. the labs are somewhat indiscriminate buyers with enormous budgets. the therapeutics market has long had buyers of data (large and small pharma) but they've historically been the exact opposite of huge-budget and indiscriminate
this shift will distort the bio startup market in a bunch of ways. there will be a lot of short-termist behavior to try to get in front of this capital firehouse. but unlike the Al data labelers (mercor, et al) and the robotics labelers (mecka, et al), the bio startups serving up this data have a chance to emerge from this period with businesses that don't rely on selling data
the best bio startups will use these sudden resources the labs are dumping on them to

Bronx residents will be exempted from new Medicaid work requirements due to the county's high unemployment rate. New York notified CMS that it intends to implement this hardship exemption. The threshold = 8% unemployment rate or 1.5x the national average (whichever is less).

head scratcher of a study from @iwashyna.bsky.social @ashfawzy.bsky.social and co

In the Hopkins study, pulse oximeters gradually shifted from overestimates to underestimates over the course of the five years when compared to arterial blood gas tests. When oximeters overestimate oxygen levels, clinicians run the risk of not providing care to patients when they need it. But underestimating can also come with issues, like providing unnecessary care or keeping patients in the hospital longer than necessary. Overall, “it is not at all clear these things are fit for use in the way that we’re using them,” said Jack Iwashyna, a pulmonologist and critical care physician who is an author on the Hopkins paper.

The recent crop of papers also raises a question about how to best study the shortcomings of pulse oximeters. The landmark 2020 paper that brought renewed attention to the devices’ bias was a retrospective, gleaning a trend from past data. Researchers at the time hoped prospective studies, where scientists actively collect data to get to the root of a problem, would be more helpful in understanding why pulse oximeters fell short in the way they do.

Wilber was finally able to undergo surgery on Thursday—11 days after he was shot. “When ICE can shoot a man in the back and then barely give him any medical treatment and let him suffer, there’s a reason for that because we have gotten to a point where we see people as less than human.”

Following the brutal killings of Houston dad Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Maine dad Johan Sebastián this past summer, ICE’s acting director claimed all officers would be equipped with body cams by the end of August. The recruit who shot Wilber Rafael Garcés Pérez in the back wasn’t using one:
