Okay one other thing. Many people think that the ethics of planetary geoheritage is a whimsical topic that doesn't affect anyone. But, and this was mentioned only briefly in this session, the legality of extra-planetary conservation is tied directly to indigenous sovereignty.

One thing I’ve been thinking about - planetary scientists and geologists don’t often think of themselves as stakeholders or advocates of planetary preservation in addition to planetary exploration. It’s a different type of problem that requires new forms of advocacy.

Obviously I have an opinion on this, but it's good to look at how existing terrestrial regulatory frameworks for how geoheritage sites on Earth are designated and managed, and their limitations, when we consider dealing with places like the Moon

Super cool that the Geological Society of America meeting this year has a co-session between planetary geology folks and geoheritage folks, looking at different ways of determining whether our goals with space exploration are to preserve planetary sites as-is, or manage them with human activity.

The best part of geology conferences is seeing the truly brutal ways that hypotheses can be disproven in the rock record. In planetary science we can get away with saying a lot of things that are near-impossible to test
