A beloved friend was taught by him at the Royal Academy - he was an extraordinary teacher who imparted the sense of the vast universes present in the small, the unnoticed, the achingly suburban. The painterly equivalent, perhaps, of R. C. Sherriff.

You don't just have to take my word for it: Marina Warner (the historian, mythographer, art critic, novelist and short story writer) called Reynard the Fox 'marvellously spirited and adroit storytelling and an exciting example of innovative translation.'

Have you read Reynard the Fox by @annelouiseavery.bsky.social? It is an onomatopoeic and synaesthetic retelling of the mediƦval fables, and will help you to see the fierce and feudal Middle Ages afresh and in the kind of vivid detail you might not have imagined possible. substack.com/@theunhurrie...

And while we're on the subject of gifts, did you know that Patreon lets you give gift subscriptions, too? Is there someone in your life who loves cake and crumble, who craves comfort, compassion, common sense—and just a little magic—in this increasingly nonsensical world of ours …
