@pennykiley.bsky.social“The bondage trousers were out in force, but is there still a place for a straight punk group at the end of 1979?”
Latest Substack was a bit controversial. It’s a 1979 Melody Maker review of the Ruts, with some thoughts on where punk was (or was not) going.

@pennykiley.bsky.socialHappy #BookshopDay. You know what to do...

@whenisbirths.bsky.socialReposted by @pennykiley.bsky.socialPop fact: Virginia Bottomley chose Stevie Wonder for Desert Island Discs. But it was this one. #totp
@pennykiley.bsky.socialI'd expect to enjoy the 1977 #totp but I'm just sitting here going "I remember this. It was crap."
@pennykiley.bsky.social#totp So Elvis dies. Do you rush out and buy an Elvis record, or do you rush out and buy a record by someone else called "I remember Elvis Presley"??
@pennykiley.bsky.social#totp I'm listening to 25-year-old songs I've never heard before and going "that's quite good."
@pennykiley.bsky.socialStay in bed!
@pennykiley.bsky.socialI don't really want to see lots of random pics of 9 LPs on my social media. Who's benefiting?
@pennykiley.bsky.socialJust back from Brighton. Next stop, Cheltenham - I'm at the literature festival next Thursday talking about "Punk at 50".
@oxfordclarion.bsky.socialReposted by @pennykiley.bsky.socialFrench bakery Savoir continues its soft opening this weekend, nearly two years after receiving planning permission. The Grade II listed building at 12 Turl St is owned by Lincoln College. It was previously Rowell's jewellers and has been vacant since the pandemic.
@pennykiley.bsky.socialIt's not even technically accurate. She's a queen consort, not a monarch. I'm not even a royalist but it still annoys me.
@pennykiley.bsky.socialTonight! I’m in #Brighton for Sound Affects – please come and see me. 7.30 at the East Street Tap. It should be a fun night.
@pennykiley.bsky.socialJust saw someone on Instagram posting about authors "making content for their books". It's called WRITING.
@andrewhickey.500songs.comReposted by @pennykiley.bsky.socialIf businesses want people to have particular skills, there's this thing called "on the job training" and this other one, "paying for training courses". The purpose of education is not to teach people to be employees, it's to teach them to be *people*.
@pennykiley.bsky.socialYeah, I guess they always close ranks. Sigh.
@pennykiley.bsky.socialJohn Cooper Clarke in @theguardian.com. "Punk rock only lasted for two years, then it lost its fun and style." Yup.

@pennykiley.bsky.socialBad man who wrote bad books dies. Why all the tributes?? (Even from the "queen" FFS.)
@pennykiley.bsky.socialI like the word blird. Also, the bit at the bottom looks like a squirrel.
