Has been for some time Tom. Started following them in 1986 and we were guff then too. But it was a different kind of guff. The owners, decisions made & players have kicked any joy out of supporting them. A root canal filling through my ear would give me more pleasure than watching another game.
Probably a much more reasoned/sensible approach than my abrupt cold-turkey divorce from the sport.
Meaning the soul has left the game. I don’t miss it at all Tom…sounds like you don’t either
I no longer have any football related apps or podcasts on my phone Tom. The state of Man Utd for the last few years has broken me, but so has the wider corruption, behaviour of players etc. It only ever disappoints and no longer feels worth it. Never thought I’d say it…
Not just on the page, but TV too. The strict personal code of the Hammett/Chandler hard-boiled protagonists is felt everywhere from The Wire to True Detective in fairly recent times.

Favourite crime novels…a great idea. For what it’s worth, here are mine:
Nice list. I’m actually reading The Outfit at the minute…it’s my first delve into the Parker world.
Jump Rope Gazers | The Beths
Read a description of TB’s that said their music is “full of minerals & nutrients”. Couldn’t agree more. Their track record is just flawless. The razor-sharp hooks, intricate arrangements & deeply human lyricism is best in class.
What a band they are.
Hey Chris, I went through a massive Coupland phase as a student (probably like many) & for a few years after. Totally agree with you…Eleanor Rigby was probably the last novel of his I really liked.
Not necessarily my favourite 9, but the 9 that made the biggest impression at the time of reading, or changed how I thought about books and reading.
😂 That’s my MO too Vincent 😂
Apparently not…you know what making the same (fiscally irresponsible) mistakes over and over is a sign of😂
I haven’t ordered it due to a rapid depletion of funds Vincent. Should I stumble into money, I’ll be right there with you.
Comfort of Strangers | Beth Orton
Last of the evening & it is so nice to finally have this Beth album on wax. Long been a favourite, it’s stripped-back, intimate vibe makes for perfect autumnal listening.
I have Here right up there with their best…probably my post-Howdy favourite.
Fingers crossed Brian 🤞😬
Such longevity Carl. As you said, countless timeless tracks they have given us.
Great song Brian. I’m also really liking ‘Take Time’, ‘Over & Over’ and ‘Tomorrow People’.
I’m catching their Belfast gig myself Brian. Really looking forward to it as always.
