Change the rules. Share the wealth. Protect the planet.
You can't bring down spending on welfare, without tackling the factors that are driving it. You need to invest in good jobs, transport, and lifting people out of poverty. Our deputy chief executive Hannah Peaker on Politics Live reacting to news from Tory Party Conference.

NEW: Without government action, energy bills are set to be £200 higher than they were at the peak of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Read our new blog detailing our new analysis and explaining why we urgently need a national energy guarantee 👇
We need more democratic control over public essentials like energy, water and housing.
Yesterday on @lbc.co.uk our Head of social policy George Bangham explained why👇
We have the bold policy solutions to address this crisis. Let’s implement them.
In his speech yesterday, Andy Burnham promised to build a new economy. Why not start with an essentials energy guarantee and a rooftop solar revolution to finally break the cycle of ever-increasing bills?
We do not have to accept a future of permanently rising bills. But to get out of this cycle, we need bold, new ideas.
Our research shows that government action to finance a rollout of rooftop solar panels across the UK could save 8 million homes £251 a year on energy bills.

By approving new North Sea drilling like Rosebank and Jackdaw, we lock ourselves further into that system. Instead, this government must invest in cheap, reliable home-grown renewable energy that no foreign leader can turn off.
But we also know that inflation and energy bills are going up because of our dependence on global fossil-fuel markets – which are repeatedly thrown into chaos by the whims of global powers that the UK has absolutely no control over.
After the amount of energy necessary for essential needs, the cost would increase so those using excessive or non-essential electricity (like heating a private pool) would pay significantly more.
This model – used successfully in many countries across the world – guarantees a low or even free price for a basic level of essential energy use. Enough to cover basics like keeping a fridge running, putting on a wash and keeping the lights on.
People need urgent relief on energy bills right now.
That demands new economic thinking.
Enter: our national energy guarantee policy.
Energy prices are going up AGAIN – this time by an average of £276. But we don’t have to accept a future of permanently rising bills. This government can stop prices spiraling – here’s how 🧵
Well, I for one am an economist who supports rent controls! Here’s why 🧵: Markets only work well if: -buyers & sellers have roughly equal power -producers respond to price signals & expand supply in response to scarcity -buyers can walk away if prices get too high

Our Senior economist Jaya Sood on BBC News this morning explaining how the government can cut the cost of living ahead of the Budget next month 👇
If the ambition is right, public investment can unlock the grid we need at a lower cost because the government can borrow more cheaply than private firms. This will benefit bill payers as every pound saved can go back to us, rather than into the pockets of shareholders.
Decades of underinvestment by private companies has meant the grid is a blocker in our efforts to role out electrification and make use of home-grown renewables. This has it more difficult for us to achieve energy security and avoid fossil fuel price spikes.
