It's National Coming Out Day, I am a trans man & I've identified as queer for about 35 years. I do wish it no longer seemed as important and potentially risky to be out as it did back then, but here we are.
I wrote an essay 6 yrs ago that still holds - daniellaurison.com/n...

Image of the headline ("national coming out day") and first 2 paragraphs or so of the blog post I wrote in 2020.

It’s National Coming Out day. I’m a transgender man. If any of you didn’t know that, and want to ask me questions, you can. I came out as a dyke (fn1) at 15, started identifying as some kind of butch or genderqueer person in my 20s, hung out with mostly other queers and lesbians until grad school, and decided to transition physically & socially in 2005. Since then I’ve tried to be out as much as possible, but my gender history doesn’t tend to come up in casual conversation, so I need to make more of an effort than I did when I was a visibly queer female-bodied person with romantic partners who were women.

Unlike many trans people, I don’t believe that I’m truly or essentially “a man,” I just figured out that I feel way more comfortable in my body & in the world having transitioned. [...]

I’m in DC scheduled to give this talk today. But the organizers flagged slides in my deck that mention racism, structural gaslighting, New Jim Code and other themes that are off limits in the Land of the Free.

We are hosting our third Peopling Politics mini-conference this spring in Philadelphia - March 4-7. Abstracts are due October 15th; let me know if you have questions. See peoplingpolitics.com for more on our network & what we're aiming to do. Apply at essnet.org.

Flyer for Peopling Politics mini-conference at ESS 2027 - on a blue background with the US Capitol in the background. Can't fit all the text here, see peoplingpolitics.com or email dlauris1@swarthmore.edu for more information. Apply at essnet.org, then select our mini-conference.

This mini-conference will bring together sociologists, political scientists, other academics, and political practitioners who study and/or work in U.S. politics with a focus on race, class, inequality, and the influence of social and cultural forces. We believe that in order to understand and affect political institutions or electoral outcomes, we must begin with the contexts and cultures of the people who make political phenomena real - from non-voters and voters to grassroots organizers to elected officials and their staff. This requires empirical observations of actual people and their actions, rather than relying on abstracted models of how individuals, political groups, or institutions operate.

If you want to read more for yourself, including detailed analyses of individual cases and lots and lots of stories from survivors and perpetrators about how they were treated, here’s a link to the book:

I spent a year watching school administrators do their jobs—and interviewing the students most impacted.

I spoke to @thecut.com in a long-form Q&A about what I saw. Mainly, a system designed to protect perpetrators and punish victims in each and every case.

thecut.comThe Reason Why Colleges Still Fail to Address Sexual ViolenceThe “Cornell Seven” case highlights what’s wrong with Trump’s Title IX rules — and how the system was always designed to fail.

In this insidehighered.com piece, Elizabeth Niehaus of @ucfreespeech.bsky.social argues that institutions must recognize faculty civic engagement as part of their democratic mission, and support it the same way they support teaching and research.

Americans have never been angrier with one another. But polarization is not the disease—it is the response to a revanchist movement seeking to roll back sixty years of social progress.

I'm not naive enough to actually believe this will happen, but Democrats could be preparing, right now, lists of impeachment charges against (at a bare minimum) Hegseth, Kennedy, Mullin, Patel, Blanche, & Trump, as well as Bondi, Bovino, & Noem (still worth doing!) that rely purely on public facts,

This is why I get pissed off when anyone accuses me of being an elitist when I say young people should go to college if they can. I say that because my dad was a local lineman and contractor who did heavy physical labor for years and has had chronic back pain since his early 30s

All of this. I also want to add that, in my research, I found that a lot of “inconsistencies” in a victim’s story actually came from gender bias affecting investigators’ record keeping and interview methods.

Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

I'm excited to be on a panel this evening at WHYY's Youth Town Hall, talking with young people about voting and democracy (and age, race, and class gaps in turnout). (This evening 4:30-7:30 at WHYY, 150 N. 6th Street.)

Image of a flyer for the event, it says "your voice, choice, vote" over a 3 cartoon heads & torsos, one looks founding-fathers, one is dude in suit, one looks like a young Black man in a beanie. Also PBS & whyy & "building blocks" logos.
