For fun, I charted the longest routes from each state. The longest is New York to Singapore, 9,536 miles. The shortest is West Virginia to St. Pete, 797 miles. For 19 states and DC, the longest route is domestic.

Yes! To me its a simple calculation, it's simply a shorter walk with fewer vertical movements. Sometimes I want a longer walk but otherwise I prefer the more direct path.
