Being GenX/Millennial is such a trip. In our lifetimes, we saw people our age getting wild criminal penalties for pirating music and now have to sit and watch as companies gobble up our work with impunity.

Still trying to understand how Napster got shut down, but Anthropic is going public and still hasn’t paid us authors yet after stealing our work.

In other Toronto things: shoutout to all these folks who fought to prevent their bike lanes being ripped out today.

Do yourself some good and see Run Terry Run.

“A pluralist democracy makes room for competing interests and resolves disputes through common norms and institutions. […] Pluralism does not let one faction claim exclusive ownership of the public will, especially when that faction has repeatedly failed to win an election.”

"Every politician that uses any term that points at there being no rules[,] no red lines sends this signal to any person in the world that bears a weapon. You have to be conscious [of] that as a holder of power [...] Many more people hear: Oh, there are no red lines. I have weapons. I can use them."

"We have created a world where war is not a means of last resort. It happens at any moment in a process, which leads to a situation where parties always keep that possibility in mind and always keep a high readiness and preparedness to return to conflict."

Local autonomy is a vital check on centralized political power. The province may have the legal authority to overrule municipalities, but legal power is not a democratic mandate. My initial thoughts on the Province’s recent directive ordering the City to reverse course on our land use bylaw.

Exceptional and important. Well worth your attention. I appreciate the format wherein @maxfawcett.bsky.social extends full allowances to @readtheorchard.org to unpack his meticulously researched and considered views on Danielle Smith and the project she leads.

“The rule of law is under vicious attack in this province and I am not the first, nor will I be the last, to call this out. When an institution is silent in the face of what is happening in this province, that silence is complicity.”

"Ripping out these protected bike lanes against the will of Toronto city council is a colossal waste of $48 million. The province’s own experts know it will not ease traffic congestion, it will put people’s lives at risk…” One of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen any politician do to any city.

#BikeTO He isn’t here to help. He isn’t here to offer services. He brings nothing to table. He’s not worth having to engage with.

He’ll always be remembered for this gem of ignorance.

We shall never forget.

I'm all for upping bike infrastructure but we're a country with winter 6-8 months a year and an average home-to-work commute time of like an hour driving so I don't think bikes are gonna be the panace some people seem to think they'll be.
