I would think it would be too much of a monumental undertaking to take care of other people when a person struggles with their own very real struggles beyond what the majority of population doesn't have to struggle with.

I used to look at these kind of horrifying pictures and think our country has come a long way. I no longer think that.
Bodies were left hanging from trees, with bulging eyes. Some victims were tortured, mutilated, and burned while crowds watched. This is the horror behind Billie Holiday’s 1939 song Strange Fruit. They were spectacles of racial terror, and some white Americans treated them as entertainment.
