TP is meaner, more blunt, & grittier but at no point does it feel any more or less hopeless than OoT or LttP. Bleak in moments but there's levity & hope. MM like a terminal illness is never not bleak & hopeless. You don't give people hope in MM, you only help them come to terms with their fate.

TP is like an active shooter. It's loud, there's mass hysteria and everyone has to react in the moment to protect themselves while MM is like getting diagnosed with a terminal illness with only a few days to live. It's quiet, you're acutely aware of it, and there's nothing you can do.

TP is a lot less subtle I've found in my current playthrough. Not to say that's a bad thing, it works for the type of story it's trying to tell. I guess the difference is the people in TP have a lot thrust on them at once while MM you see people who see their doom coming and can do nothing about it.

I think when people call Twilight Princess "the darkest Zelda," they're only really thinking of the prologue. It starts like a normal Zelda, then becomes bleak until you become human again. Some moments are intense, sure, but it never reaches the level of oppressively dark Majora's Mask maintained.
