“In America—and, therefore in the rest of the world—unless you are a special case, consent isn’t on the menu.” One of the most concise distillations I’ve read yet about the Cornell rape case and its relationship to privilege in America today.

"When someone is gang-raped, there appears to be something to defend, and it’s not bodily autonomy; there appears to be something to protect, and it’s not the victim." Life in this predator's paradise and the problem of shameless people. www.the-reframe.com/the-good-guys/

This is so much worse than the headline really makes out. Seems kind of like Nikon didn't check hard enough and maybe looked past how genAI was used to fabricate this imagery

I, personally, own 1 piece of original art that appeared on a book I worked on. It was purchased for me as a gift, by a friend, who bought it from the artist after the book was published.

@masinger.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 11:04 PM

Back in the day we occasionally received actual paintings in the office & were very careful about storage & packing material so we could return the work to the artist. It didn't belong to us!

Yep. And it's been a bit, but usually what the publisher is paying for is the right to use the created art -for- that work and and for the promotion/marketing/etc. of that work. Not the art in perpetuity/on its own.

I love my nose and its bump! Almost all the women on my maternal side have had that nose for at least 4 generations. Dd got her donor's nose and it's very cute but I was a little sad she didn't get the family nose.

I'm so sorry. 21 years is amazing to me. I haven't had one live longer than 16-17, but he was only with me for a decade. Still, even 21 years isn't enough. Even for a cat you can't touch but still love.

As an editor, I want to point out that the writer bats last. I might suggest changes & the writer might say No. I might even go into a book knowing that the writer is a "don't touch," that I'm basically there to catch anything truly egregious & otherwise leave the manuscript alone. They decide.

hello, I am doing some research and would like to tap into the collective brains of BSKY: 1. can you share some genre or literary fiction magazines that have closed and the archive is NO LONGER ONLINE 2. the same but the archives remain online FOR NOW i would also appreciate RTs for awareness 💀

NYC peeps, don't forget there are FIVE ballot proposals to vote on! my mom wanted to fill out her absentee ballot this week so I've read the proposals. some places I usually look at for analysis haven't weighed in yet but some proposals don't impress me (yet?).

for me, it's all about the show floor & Artists Alley. seeing & sometimes talking to people whose work I adore. like, yesterday, Stan Sakai was there, but he had a huge crowd & I didn't have anything to ask him to sign but I have been reading Usagi Yojimbo for 4 decades & wd have loved to thank him.

@masinger.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 4:15 PM

completely dependent on what your interests are and your tolerance for loud, crowded spaces. it is possible to only go to panels and screenings and not visit the show floor at all, of course, but then you could be at pretty much any sf & f related con. I almost never go to panels, maybe 1 a year.

@masinger.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 4:02 PM

ran into an old friend/former coworker within 5 minutes of arriving at the con. just happened to be in the same hallway at the same time. very nice bc otherwise our paths would not have crossed.

@masinger.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 4:02 PM

had a nice chicken korma kati roll and a samosa for lunch--had some real spice/bite to it, unlike past Indian food at the Javits convention center, which was bland. expensive! $26 for 1 (not large) kati roll, 1 samosa, & a soda. but tasty and completely filling.

It's #NYCC weekend so I am comic-conning my feet off. Decided to do my book-buying first this year, so as not to have to shlep a load home when really tired on Sunday, & therefore spent most of the day in Artists Alley, where I buy stuff directly from writers/artists or very small presses.

Average result for me, some things I simply wasn't aware of; one, I clicked the wrong thing just as my brain said, "wait, it's _this_!" Would have been right, too.

screenshot of Slate News Quiz results showing that the poster correctly answered 8 of 12 questions for 381 points, beating the staffer, who got 314 points, and the average score of 308 points.

👀 👀 Sheesh, that really is ridiculous.

You had such a crowd when I walked by!

Actually I buy books very rarely. I am a heavy user of ebooks through Libby. NYCC is my annual indulgence. But last month I went to a book fair and bought a lot of stuff. Too many good writers present!
