Fascinating, Roy, thank you for sharing them.

@simonknott.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 1:24 PM

Oh, I forgot Whitby Abbey, that's also not far off!

@simonknott.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 1:10 PM

Thanks. I'm sure you'll love it. And Monkwearmouth and Jarrow, and Lindisfarne, and Hexham not far off! I look forward to reading about your trip.

The cathedral is architecturally splendid, I'm not sure it has as much to offer inside as some other cathedrals. But Durham is certainly beautiful!

The late 12th Century Galilee Chapel at Durham Cathedral, dominated by the shrine of St Bede. The large collection of medieval and continental glass in this chapel was set here in the 1960s. It includes glass from Ackworth Grange, Warwick Priory and several York churches.

The Smiths room has been added since I first visited more than twenty years ago, but other than that it would be hard to spot any differences. They're very proud of their heritage, and the recent successful £250,000 appeal will ensure the integrity of the building for a while longer.

2/2 Thomas places his hand into the wound of Christ, a 16th century Flemish roundel now in the Galilee Chapel of Durham Cathedral. The attractive setting is much later, presumably early 19th Century, and includes some fragments of old Flemish glass.

2/2 The view east at Durham Cathedral, showing the location of the round window.

Here's the whole thing. The full inscription reads 'By faith Moses refuses to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the People of God rather than enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season' Glass by Henry Holiday, 1895, Durham Cathedral.

Tobias and Raphael take their leave of Tobit and Anna, 16th Century Flemish glass now in the Galilee Chapel of Durham Cathedral. It's one of two panels dated 1529 and labelled with the name Herr Thomas van Zwaneburch. They came to Durham in 1957, and were probably made for a domestic setting.

A fragmentary panel from a 15th Century Seven Sacraments series, depicting Matrimony, part of a large collection of medieval and continental glass set in the Galilee Chapel of Durham Cathedral in the 1960s. It probably came from a York church. Whoever reset it tried to give the groom a crown!

'By faith Moses refuses to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter'

Glass by Henry Holiday, 1895 in Durham Cathedral, with a strong vibe of the Egyptomania of the day. #StaindGlassSunday

Yes, it does look as if it might be made of fondant icing!

That's right. Margaret Agnes Rope ('Marga') was a member of the Suffolk Rope family, but she was actually born and brought up in Shrewsbury, where her father Henry had moved to be a surgeon at the Infirmary. A brass memorial plaque to him, once in the hospital chapel there, is now at Kesgrave:

Thank you!

3/3 The foundation stone of Lucy House, Kesgrave which houses meeting rooms and the offices of the Rope family charity. LDR was Lucy Rope, wife of Michael (FMR). They'd been married a year when he died in 1930, and had a son, Crispin (CMR). Lucy died in 2003, aged 96.

2/3 In the vestry in Lucy House next door is a reminder that the church was built by the Rope and Jolly families in memory of Michael Rope, killed in the R101 disaster. Michael was the brother of the stained glass artist Margaret Agnes Rope, whose work is also in the family church.
