I appreciate @robinsonmeyer.bsky.social linking to our analysis of the recent surge in proposed gas power plants, but current permitting laws aren’t the cause of it.

Three years ago, under these same laws, the U.S. was ramping down fossil fuel generation and now we're ramping up. What changed?

A video that explains a lot of the problems with investor-owned utilities that is actually funny and engaging (no, really!)? I have long been a fan of @climatetown.bsky.social so I'm not surprised that if anyone can do it, it's Rollie and team!

it's been a long time, so I might be mis-remembering. But I feel like when Ossoff first came on the scene, Rs used to mock him as being a soyboy. He's definitely hit the gym / grown up.

The Senate will take up permitting reform in early November, so it's time to grapple w what Dem negotiators gave up to streamline permitting for clean energy. @jeremysymons.bsky.social finds that the provisions won by the fossil & tech lobbies would cause lasting damage to our climate & clean air.

V v good new @earthjustice.org report on the genuinely nutty numbers behind the data centre fossil fuel boom in the US

This new update shows emissions from off-grid gas plants for data centres are WAY worse than previously estimated

earthjustice.org/feature/data...

Climate & Public Health
▪ Massive scale and impact: The scale of both total
and individual BYOP proposals is massive. As of
August 2026, there are nine proposed gas BYOP
projects that are 4.5 GW or larger. If all are built,
nine of the top 10 largest power plants in the U.S.
would be data center gas BYOP.
Altogether, the current 177 GW of gas proposals
would emit over 400 million metric tons of carbon
dioxide equivalent ( MTCO 2e) annually, increasing
the U.S. power sector’s total emissions by 23% .
Ozone and particulate matter pollution from
these projects could cause an estimated $5 –10B
in monetized health damages each year. 1
▪ Majority gas: Building on prior reports, we
estimate that for current BYOP proposals,
approximately 80% of energy generation will
come from gas.
▪ Inefficient gas technologies with more air
pollution: More than half of disclosed gas BYOP
capacity uses technologies that are less efficient
and more polluting than typical gas power plants. Majority gas: Building on prior reports, we estimate that for current BYOP proposals, approximately 80% of energy generation will come from gas.

1/8 🚨 NEW: We found a network of 30+ pro-oil front groups coordinating, tracking progress, and reporting back to their funders about how they are shaping energy conversations in Canada. It looks like that was supposed to stay under the radar, except they left their platform completely public 👇

WHOA. This is big news. Mr. Soliman is a 31-year-old gay man from Egypt who came here at 3 with a green card. He lost his green card after a conviction, but an immigration judge found that he would be persecuted in Egypt and barred sending him there. He's locked in a hotel in Equatorial Guinea now.

A federal judge has ordered the Department of Homeland Security to return Ahmed Soliman to the United States, five months after he was expelled to Equatorial Guinea, a country where he has no ties, in a decision that could have far-reaching implications for thousands of others subjected to the Trump administration’s third-country removal scheme.

Arizona District Court Judge John C. Hinderaker, a Trump appointee, ruled that DHS violated the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment and “must facilitate Plaintiff’s release from custody in Equatorial Guinea and return to the United States and must ensure his case is handled as it would have been had he not been improperly sent to Equatorial Guinea.”

“At least 26 senators, more than a quarter of the chamber, hold data center-linked investments … Sheldon Whitehouse, a Democrat from Rhode Island whose data center investments total between $2.1 million and $8.6 million, takes the number one spot.” 👀

worst guy you know etc etc

He told Guilfoyle he would pay her $1 million if she helped him land an interview on former Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s show—where he hoped to draw attention to his cause.

Guilfoyle assured Deters she was working to get him in front of Carlson. “We should hear something by the end of the week,” she wrote in December 2024.

Text messages reviewed by the Journal show Guilfoyle reached out to people in Carlson’s orbit about setting up an interview with him for Deters. It didn’t go far.

Carlson told the Journal he’d never heard of Deters and doesn’t keep up with Guilfoyle, who doesn’t have a role influencing which guests he selects: “A million dollars for a podcast appearance? Isn’t she the ambassador to Greece? This is completely nuts.”

Yeah, I saw that thread as well, thanks. Really hard not to see this as a poison pill blocking future climate action. I appreciate that this bill has some good parts, but it feels like there is a TON of downside risk.

@timdonaghy.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 7:42 PM

Thanks for a very useful article! Per the last section, would a "tacit freeze" on fossil fuel permits also become challenge-able? Because that seems like a very very bad outcome for climate policy.
