For a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon in NYC, here's a January 1968 photo of Broadway Joe Namath, NY Jets quarterback, watching TV with his left leg elevated. The leg was in a thigh-to-ankle cast to reduce strain on his chronically inflamed knee.

Namath is in profile, wearing a satin robe; the coffee table is glass and metal; the big TV is a classic console type. But the star of this photo is the shaggiest shag carpet you ever saw in your life.

I don’t live in Los Angeles, but I like to imagine that sending your screenplay to a guy you’re not interested in would be a great way to get him to leave you alone.

Yes! And: I once saw a vision-impaired person on here *very* nicely ask a movie account for alt text and get blocked. Afterward she said sadly that she just wanted to join the fun. You see something like that and unless you're heartless you start adding the alt text. (Scolding, OTOH, doesn't work.)

What a weird world we live in - Ukraine hits a data centre deep in Russia - Irish twitter users see racist posts about IPAS centres in Offaly fall off a cliff

And now the best part: Bot traffic from the #Yandex network has plunged to near zero following the strike on its Vladimir data center. Bot traffic includes automated requests from search crawlers, scrapers and other online services. Twitter must be a ghost town by now.

early 1870s, Japan. Matsusaburo Yokoyama in Hakodate took a picture of his younger brother Matsukura

Captured in an intimate studio interior in Hakodate during the early 1870s, this monochrome photograph portrays a young man—Matsukura, the younger brother of pioneering photographer Yokoyama Matsusaburōā€”crouched upon a bare wooden floorboard. Clad in a simple, light-colored long-sleeved shirt and trousers tied at the waist with a dark sash (obi), his unstyled hair falls loosely over his forehead as he sits with his knees drawn tightly toward his chest. His gaze is directed thoughtfully toward a series of flat rectangular trays or glass plates arranged across the floor in front of him, likely darkroom chemical baths or printing frames used in the early wet-collodion photographic process. To the right, the shadowy edge of a studio backdrop, draped fabrics, and an ornate carved wooden chair leg frame the scene. The image is marked by scratches, silvering, and chemical aging along the borders, enriching its vintage materiality. The photograph evokes a tactile and quiet sensory atmosphere: the cool draft drifting across unpolished floorboards, the pungent, vinegary scent of acetic acid, collodion, and silver nitrate in the studio, the silent scrape of glass plates, and the suspended, introspective stillness of an artist's apprentice at work.

Mr. Dreyer's astounding powers of recollection aside, this post of his about the calming power of list-making, with its lovely coda, gave me some good feelings. I will make some lists today.

Modi's anti-Muslim oppression is so underreported in the West, which is a big reason dumbass Islamophobes will tell you that no one is oppressing Muslims, they're the ones who want to conquer us.

This picture by Adnan Abidi seems to sum up 2026. A woman fighting disenfranchisement of Muslims in a country being ruled by a would-be autocrat who wants to make India into an ethno-nationalist state

He was terrible but I find him fascinating. I wrote a loooong piece about him at my substack a few years ago; paywalled because it involved a lot of work, but it was good to sort out my thoughts.

You cannot possibly look at Sissy Spacek’s performance in Carrie and not be wowed by the ways in which that movie gets you to care about her, to root for her, and to imagine against all reason that it might work out for her. If you don’t get that, you have simply lost the plot.

Charles MacArthur and Helen Hayes, photographed as blissful newlyweds by Edward Steichen in late 1928. The Front Page was still playing to SRO houses, Hayes was still touring with Coquette, and she would be pregnant with daughter Mary in the spring of 1929. Hayes was #BornThisDay in 1900.

Charles is in profile at left, curly hair much in evidence, with a small smile. Helen has her arm affectionately hooked through his and is looking away from him.
