and it's not just gaming consoles -- I'd guess that some amount of male reading used to happen on commuting trains, for example, and now commuting men listen to podcasts or play games or check social media.

and, yeah: there are a finite number of hours for hobbies, in many ways a lot of middle class professionals actually have less free time than people used to have -- work, parenting etc bleeds into it -- and if people have hobby options that aren't reading then that will affect reading behaviour!

to be fair i think my kids are now in the space where it's actually easier to be out with them -- very easy to host with a small baby, easier to host with bigger kids, but toddlers and young school-aged kids (in a small flat) make it very hard to cook and entertain and eat a meal without tears
