I am way too online for my own good, and I had an unreasonably large twitter following, and I really *enjoyed* twitter for a lot of years, and yet leaving there and never looking back was maybe the easiest what-felt-like-a-big-ethical decision I've ever made.

I will not only be relieved but truly *ecstatic* to be wrong, if more and better studies soon start showing that AI actually improves learning and cognitive motivation. But so far they all show the opposite, and that is consistent with the evidence that I and other educators are seeing on the ground

„I suggest the get a new leader.“ Es klingt bei ihm alles immer wie eine Projektion.

Klimt's Portrait of Margaret Stonborough-Wittgenstein (1905) closes his Golden Phase (roughly 1899–1909). Gold elements merge with geometric patterns and abstract motifs in the background, epitomizing his ornamental style.

It's important to remember that the AI doom scenario assumes not only that intelligence is a single well-defined thing, but also that intelligence solves literally every single problem, and that in every conflict overwhelming intelligence always wins. This is just not how anything works.

Well, well, here’s Google AI getting its Blackburn mixed up with its @timcrane.bsky.social and Mellor! Back to school, lad! #philsky

The Philosophical Analogy

The British philosopher Simon Blackburn famously used a comparison regarding physicalism (the philosophical thesis that everything is physical, including the mind): ®

"And saying that minds are all physical no more helps to explain how some physical things can think than saying that all flesh is grass helps to explain the difference between carnivores and vegetarians." ©

Blackburn uses this phrase to illustrate a flaw in reductive materialism. While it is scientifically true that all animal life ("flesh") relies fundamentally on plant matter ("grass") at the base of the food chain, stating this broad truth does absolutely nothing to clarify the specific operational differences between a tiger and a cow. Similarly, simply declaring that the mind is "physical" fails to explain how a brain actually generates thought.

It’s an honour to be confused with Simon, but I guess that Gemini was not trying to flatter me!

There is a rather wider minority for abolishing the Monarchy (about 1 in 5 to 1 in 4) than for the controversy of whether only white people can be English (1 in 10). It is weird the media classes are so rarely across how niche this 'controversy' is - about 1/4 Reform voters, but few others

🌊 'At Sea About Ourselves'

Tim Crane spoke to The Heart of the Public about formation, reading and AI.

'Education is in crisis. And it’s not just because students aren’t writing anymore. (...)they’re not reading(...)They’re not reading anything.'

I meant 'phenomenal consciousness' is a made up term, not 'consciousness'

@timcrane.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 11:04 AM

A computer is a being, yes! I just use the word as the most general category for existing things. I myself think that a conscious being has to be in some sense ('pre-reflectively' maybe) aware of itself, in being aware of the world, but many will disagree with this

@timcrane.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 11:02 AM

I agree there is no sharp line. But I don't think that our language dictates that valenced experience should be called sentience or phenomenal consciousness -- the first for me connotes consciousness of some kind, and the latter is a made up philosophers' term

Before the gold mosaics, Klimt mastered the "Glow." In Lady by the Fireplace (1898), domesticity becomes drama. By using the fire as a spotlight, he transforms a quiet interior into a moody, psychological stage.

If on the other hand, you were a bot, then you wouldn't have a face, so it would be a bit more difficult

@timcrane.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 6:55 AM

If I knew who you were, then maybe we could meet and we could look each other in the face :)
