*to be clear, these people 1) should not have been in the house removing pipes.
Being up late has perks, such as hearing people ripping pipes out of walls at a neighbor's house that's mid-renovation. Good times!
ALSO in local movie theater minutiae you didn't ask for, note that the marquee/sign for the theater is flat against the bldg. That's due to overhang sign restrictions on boulevards and parkways. Other thtrs elsewhere in the city had to abide by that as well.
Back when demo site security was nil, I walked right onto the theater site, took photos and a couple pieces of broken terracotta, and walked right back out again. At one point it was to be reno'd into new public library but then sold to Lou Wolf, left derelict, demo'd ca. '92/3.
was a Walgreens back in the olden days. Also note the now-demolished Sheridan Theater in the background.
We have a vintage recreation that just went up in Woodlawn on 63rd. First floor commercial. Would be interesting to see the rent. Built by a landowner whose portfolio is heavy on preservation projects
The story was that she had money, and owned one or more apartment buildings. Croaky voice. Would borrow cigarettes from the people she knew in the tattoo shop or elsewhere. Always an interesting conversation when you'd see her. I haven't thought of her in years.
I try to stay away from the poison nostalgia that is that Forgotten Chicago page but today saw an exciting (to me)street scene photo. The woman on the right is Babs. She lived in the hotel upstairs from the tattoo shop just to the east of where this photo was taken...
Cliff's is the greatest ROI in rock (time spent vs influence), or maybe second only to Danny Cedrone (Rock Around the Clock solo)
we have such an inferiority complex
Captions are working great
Hey @keithweesner.bsky.social check it out
still shows up in the 2007 StreetView. They moved the statue slightly west and south sometime around '16 because a car drove into it (it was almost curbside at that point)
it's such a great idea BTW the hotel (the Grand Hotel) that used to be across the street on the west that you see in photos/film. When the Olympics folks were headed to town to look at Washington park, that building (abandoned at the time) was demo'd with incredible switftness
Thought it was curious that the operating engineer positions (posted before it opened) weren't union
just do asbestos you can! (i'll show myself out)
quick history: 20 was carved out of 5th when the population of the area was ~60K more than it is now. Aldermanic outcomes since then: died in office/jail/died in office/jail/jail/current ald.
Imagine a Woodlawn with such a packed and bustling commercial district that a firehouse had to be built on a side street
oh the irony (from '22)
