it truly does. I hold irrational hope that it's solvable, but then I remember I once read nothinghuman.substack.com/p/the-tyrann... and all I can see is a sea of Marls. I don't know what to do about it

I don’t necessarily believe in P≠NP but I definitely don’t believe in P=NP because the interleaving algorithm is just too dumb to be a universal algorithm for NP-complete problems (which would be in P since P would =NP)

In this thread, an apology to my spouse for playing the same 20-second passage over and over again for the last 2 hours

@cscheid.netOct 10, 2026, 4:24 PM

taking music seriously made me notice one big meta-skill if you're going to make the move from appreciation to performance, you better figure out how to enjoy the struggle. That's not out of some vague stoic sense; it's just that the ratio of time spent struggling vs performing is like 20-50:1

By far my least favorite Zed feature is the automatic filetype detector. It triggers mid-typing and changes the meaning of keyboard actions: you're typing in a plain-text document and Zed decides to flip to Markdown mode. So you end up having to type while staring at the status line. Zed, _why_.

We're making it easier for you to run these all off of the main binary right now. Stay tuned!

listen, we all have to accept some bad outcomes

@cscheid.netOct 9, 2026, 6:44 PM

Although, given this specific poster, I’m presently of the ”let them fight” persuasion

@cscheid.netOct 9, 2026, 4:11 PM

Oh I realize now it’s behind the paywall. Anyway it’s totally worth your Patreon support :)

@cscheid.netOct 9, 2026, 4:10 PM

There’s a really great @inbedwiththeright.bsky.social episode about exactly this!

NEW YOON HA LEE SPACE OPERA THIS IS NOT A DRILL NEW YOON HA LEE SPACE OPERA seriously. If you haven't read the Machineries of Empire series... ooh boy are you in for a treat

EEmily Tesh@emilytesh.netOct 9, 2026, 11:17 AM

just finished reading Code and Codex by Yoon Ha Lee (new! Yoon Ha Lee! space opera! out this month!) and man. no one else does the combination of indulgent (complimentary) and very, very clever quite so well.

This is wild - somebody did a deep dive into the real stories behind this famous XKCD:

sheets.works/data-viz/hol...

an XKCD comic showing a precariously assembled tower of blocks. much is labelled "all modern digital infrastructure." a thin leg down at the bottom is labelled "A project some random person in Nebraska has been thanklessly maintaining since 2003."

Were you about 95% right, or would your definition be slightly loose and yet encompass the true definition 95% of the time were we to repeat the experiment infinitely often? I'll show myself out

It’s a monetized X account. It’s pretty evidently a troll, even if he believes the bit. People around here ought to know better

@cscheid.netOct 8, 2026, 4:32 PM

Thank you: it’s not a free thing for you to say. I just wanted to say I see it and appreciate it; it means a lot.

@cscheid.netOct 8, 2026, 4:13 PM

We can structure our lives to avoid unthinkingly putting work on other people's inboxes. But few people give a shit. LLMs made this go foom, and it really fucking sucks for everyone now. Still, the source of the behavior already existed: shitty people who never gave a shit to begin with.
