For the record, since this story says media was denied access, I also tried to attend and as I was waiting in the hallway for an organizer (who said go away) I saw a certain scribbler from this very paper leaving the main room and was told he had an arrangement with the premier to hear her speak.

I think we, as Canadians, do not appreciate enough the fact that in our history we have not one, but two premiers named "Duff." Thomas Dufferin "Duff" Pattullo, premier of BC from 1933 to 1941, and Charles Dufferin "Duff" Roblin Jr., premier of Manitoba from 1958 to 1967.

I took a wild stab a couple years ago at trying to understand why politicians were getting more long-winded and I think I was maybe vaguely on the right track (if I do say so myself).

"He is deliberate, technical and unhurried, which isn’t always a hit with the Parliamentary Press Gallery."

This is the most interesting thing I've read on politics in a while.

The latest data shows the Canada-Alberta MOU agreement didn’t fix the problems with industrial carbon markets in the province.

Carbon credit prices are still trading at rock-bottom prices—too low to incentivize big investments in emissions reductions.🧵

Has anything replaced Finnegan's Market since it closed in 2022? (I suppose I should know the answer to that question myself.)

JOINT STATEMENT OF THE FOREIGN MINISTERS OF CANADA, DENMARK, GERMANY, FRANCE, ITALY, JAPAN, THE NETHERLANDS, UNITED KINGDOM "As committed supporters of the ICC we regret and strongly disagree with the announcement of sanctions to be imposed upon the Court by the United States."

I'm beginning to worry that online gambling markets are not, in fact, a good barometer of who might win the Nobel Peace Prize.

I haven't flipped through it in years, but I highly recommend it. Pratte's particularly great on Laurier's 1877 speech on liberalism.

Reading Andre Pratte's book on Wilfrid Laurier, as one does.

He blazed a trail so wide that it left a lot of new room for other MPs to express the odd independent thought without seeming like wild-eyed mavericks.

Weiler isn't a member of the ministry. He's not a parliamentary secretary. He's not obligated to follow the government line at all times. In theory, he has a responsibility to hold the government to account. And I think maybe we're getting more used to backbenchers doing this. Which is good.

@aaronwherry.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 6:00 PM

This is both noteworthy and exactly what backbench MPs should do every so often.

The fine print of Poilievre's bill noted that it would have applied to Calgary, but not Edmonton.

@aaronwherry.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 5:50 PM

Pierre Poilievre's housing plan was aimed at incentivizing municipalities to eliminate barriers to more housing and I wonder how it would've interacted with what the Alberta government is now doing.

Something most commentators outside Quebec don’t realize: 60% of Quebec Solidaire supporters are federalists. Something like 16% of the party’s supporters would vote yes.

Just another factor that complicates matters beyond adding up seats.

I worry that AI has a brand problem.

@aaronwherry.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 6:27 PM

The House of Commons is debating the price of food, which is a bit weird because eliminating the carbon tax was supposed to solve that problem.
