Ok, I definitely need to look into conferences in Western Australia.

Go ahead and count all the Whooping Cranes in this one field.

And it is a female faculty member 😐 Same person claims that our ER is busy because too many people go there for minor issues and should just go to their GP. I have tried explaining that isn’t always an option but it’s like trying to explain the concept of Norway to my dogs.

@evoneuro.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 8:04 PM

That’s a better option than me wanting to slap faculty! My favourite: wear a dirty cloth mask everywhere to “stay safe” while refusing to get any vaccinations for over 3 years. And from someone who teaches virus evolution

The 2020s will be best known for widespread cognitive dissonance. Holding two contradictory views is widespread even within the “woke academy” of university faculty.

I depend on free expression protections. I’ve used them. That’s why UCalgary’s handling of a residential school denial table on the eve of Truth and Reconciliation Day troubles me.

The principles didn’t require silence. They required work nobody did.

Or funded schools. Or provided some money back to struggling post-secondaries. Or a recruitment campaign for foreign doctors. So many options, yet all the money pissed away.

My odd perspective is that I can’t be bothered applying (so at least I’m not adding to the application surge). I have a hell of a time attracting any graduate students here, post docs are expensive, and I get little to no support for my research, so I don’t even try (👋 to any admin reading this)

Important reminder of why these are called beautiful firetails 🥰

Hong Kong hosts, 200 yellow-crested cockatoos, roughly 10% of the critically endangered species' global population.

To overcome a shortage of natural nesting spaces, researchers are installing camera-equipped artificial nest boxes to protect and study the birds.

Knowing that other birds swivel their eyes so that they are more binocular at landing, that make sense. But it does leave the question open as to how they capture prey, a behaviour that is also meant to be dependent on binocular vision in raptors.

I suspect that’s what’s happening: Baza are scanning with their lateral views to detect/track inverts and herps. We noticed this divergence in museum skulls but would be good to measure visual fields in live birds (or retina from dead ones)

Possibly the Pacific Baza was more tolerant of people as it was busy hunting frogs. I didn't even know they did that.

I still think they have weird heads. Baza eyes really stick out in the sides and are not as frontally oriented as other hawks. I love the goggle eyed freaks but it is weird and I have yet to work out the advantage to that for a predatory bird.

A sad finding from one of our students: a dead long-eared owl snagged on barbed wire. Although barbed wire is the default for many ranchers, it is a source of mortality for owls worldwide. Another sad reminder of our impacts on wildlife.

A mottled grey and brown owl with an orange-ish face is hanging from the top wire of a barbed wire fence by one of its wings. The fencing is along grassland with a blue sky with a few scattered clouds above.

I can’t remember what journal it was. But I definitely remember it and thought that it was about time that someone made this clear for the capital P psychologists

I know, I reviewed at one stage and gave it a very positive review!
