Today is Robert Gould Shaw’s birthday. One of the attendees at my talk today handed me this figurine, which I have placed next to my Civil War general made of play dough.
Robert Gould Shaw was born in Boston OTD in 1837. He commanded the all-Black 54th Massachusetts Inf. in the Civil War. He & many of his soldiers were KIA in 1863. The 54th was immortalized in the 1989 film “Glory.”
Read @civilwarmemory.bsky.social’s new biography of him!

Will need to get back to you on that. Thanks.
I need to write something up, but the Lost Cause once reflected a fairly uniform set of ideas that was reflected in different ways in public spaces and the broader culture. It's much more diffuse. Individuals latch on to various threads for a wide range of reasons. That's all for how. Thanks.
I no longer think that it makes much sense to talk about the Lost Cause to describe a wide range of issues related to the politics and culture of Civil War memory in today's America. We desperately need a new category. #CivilWarMemory
Thanks to everyone in the History Department at Sam Houston State University for their warm welcome and especially to Brian Jordan and Evan Rothera for inviting me to talk about my new biography of Robert Gould Shaw and for the time spent with students. It was a wonderful visit.
Well done.
Thanks so much for the kind words. It was great seeing you today.

In this interview, Kevin Levin describes the real Robert Gould Shaw hiding behind the bronze monument on Beacon Hill, a wealthy but aimless young man whose memory lives on through a fateful summer afternoon in South Carolina. www.hubhistory.com/episodes/a-g...

We did in the video.
I enjoyed my conversation with @tattooedhistorian.bsky.social so much that we decided to turn it into a regular series called "Historians Off the Cuff." Check it out. #CivilWarMemory #publichistory 🗃️
