His dangerous language has endangered her personal safety for years. Now, weaponizing law enforcement for blatant political intimidation – weeks before an election he knows he’s losing – is an appalling, desperate abuse of power.

In a twisted authoritarian spectacle, federal agents raided Ilhan Omar's home this morning. Trump has made no secret of his disdain for the Congresswoman – frequently using racist, tyrannical drivel to express an unhinged desire to expel her from the country.

No reasonable law enforcement agency would ever fire a hail of bullets into a car that presents no safety threat … with a five-year-old in the backseat. We need an independent investigation. We need Oscar to be released from custody immediately. And we need ICE to get the hell out of our city.

There also must be an independent investigation, led by the NYS Attorney General, to ensure accountability for this shooting. I’m also calling for a thorough review of NYPD actions yesterday. It is the job of the NYPD to preserve safety and peace, not to facilitate ICE detentions and deportations.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time, or the tenth, or the hundredth, that ICE has endangered kids. We just hit the streets to demand that Oscar Belgal be released from ICE custody immediately. He’s currently being held at MDC Brooklyn.

Belgal was not presenting a safety risk to anyone at the time. It was ICE officers who created all the danger and lawlessness. It was ICE who carelessly and needlessly unleashed a hail of bullets that could easily have killed a 5-year old.

Yesterday afternoon, ICE agents — who did not present a warrant, and who appear to have been disguised as construction workers — fired 7 shots into a car with a 5-year-old child, hitting Oscar Belgal in the neck.

There was a 5-year-old in the car and it isn't in the headline or subhed.

We’re still learning details about today’s ICE-involved shooting in Marble Hill. Sadly, of course, we expect ICE to lie & gaslight us. With our own tax dollars.

We’re sick of ICE terrorizing our neighbors. Sick of it. Like the brave people of Minneapolis, we have zero tolerance for federal agents lawlessly unleashing violence on our streets.

Tonight we read the heartrending words of those who lost Israeli loved ones on Oct 7th — and Palestinian loved ones in the three years since. We said kaddish for all of them. We refused to compromise on anyone’s humanity. No amount of shouting stopped us. May their memory be for a blessing.

Join me tonight in Union Square, to mourn together, and to demand a future that doesn’t compromise on anyone’s humanity.

But on this third anniversary of October 7th, a good start is to try to resist the flattening of empathy, to let ourselves weep for all the lives lost, the children killed, the families torn apart, the homes destroyed.

Every life stolen was an entire world. The point is not to pretend that all we need is shared mourning, or to equate the suffering on both sides. Reckoning and accountability are required.
