I’ve been seeing more police doing cutesy meet and greet events with their robots, I feel the need to remind people: many of these companies deliberately advertise the goodwill departments can get on social media via selfies, and that these are like putting a cute face on a rolling Flock cameras

for some ppl privacy arguments don't resonate. 'nothing i do is illegal.' ok sure. but the case against surveillance goes beyond individual privacy. it's also abt the huge risks unregulated companies & governments pose to society, and as shown in this illuminating WSJ story, national security.

If dems had any real convictions and any desire the preserve democracy and our rights, they’d start trying to cancel contracts and debare companies regardless of how much momentary chaos it would cause in the intelligence agencies/military.

Democrats must recon with the idea that, guided by ideology and in exchange for massive profits from government contracts, many of these tech companies were *fine* assisting with the erosion of democracy and civil/human rights violations en mass.

This brings back up what I think is one of the most telling questions in U.S. politics: if it would substantially make their job safer, then why doesn’t every police union in the U.S. talk nonstop about gun control?

I'm speaking today to the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility about the ethical implications of having money invested in institutions/funds that prop up police technology companies--these companies often avoid the same scrutiny investors put on arms manufacturers, fossil fuels, etc.

The mid-1970s Church Committee investigation showed that the FBI, the CIA, and other intelligence agencies targeted the left collectively, not as isolated movements. We need to learn that lesson today.

Good to see reporters calling what's happening in San Francisco what it really is: Surveillance maximalism. The leadership of the city sees no problem they can't solve by defunding resources that prevent crime and pouring all their money, plus all the money offered by billionaires, into policing.

Off-brand posting for a second, but I need your recommendations for hotels, restaurants, bar, hikes, and any other experiences in the Columbia River Gorge, Willamette Valley, and other general between Portland/Seattle destinations.
