It's called pea gravel, it's unique to that area and is very unpredictable. It is gravel but there were long sections it had compacted down more due to the amount of unexpected rain they had before and during the racing

I, and I imagine many others, will argue that it could be hugely favourable to have multiple options in races. The way racing is now requires more than one leader that isn't Pogačar. And even then UAE have options. Options frees up more for teams in races!
